Quote:Milos Teodosic named EuroLeague MVP for October

The start of a new era in European basketball has been highlighted by the singular genius of arguably the most spectacular passer in the sport today, Milos Teodosic of CSKA Moscow, who is Euroleague Basketball’s choice as MVP for October in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Both a reigning champion and a former MVP of the competition, Teodosic found new ways to make magic in October as CSKA won its four games by an average of 13 points. To say only that Teodosic leads the league in assists with 9.5 per game is to understate just how unique and creative many of them have been. Few players have the vision to even try such passes, let alone make them arrive with pin-point accuracy to grateful teammates, as Teodosic did throughout October. He had no fewer than 8 assists in any of CSKA’s victories while still averaging 14.3 points per game. Given Teodosic’s talent at generating points for himself and his teammates, it is no accident that CSKA leads the EuroLeague with a remarkable 95.3 scoring average, all the more reason for this talented champion, Milos Teodosic, to be selected as MVP of October.

The MVP of the Month honor is now in its 13th season. Although statistics and performance index ratings are taken into consideration for the award, they alone do not determine who is honored. The winner is named by Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team’s performance. The award for October was based on the four regular season games that all teams played during the month.

CSKA opened up its title defense away against Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul and its passionate fans. Despite a frontline debilitated by injury, CSKA set the club’s own EuroLeague record for scoring this century with an 85-109 blowout win. Both the score total and CSKA’s 25-point victory margin remain the biggest by a EuroLeague team this season, and Teodosic had everything to do with it. His double-double of 20 points and 11 assists included 5 three-pointers, matching the most made by any EuroLeague player in October. At home in their second game, the champs rallied from 5 points behind with 6 minutes left as Teodosic collected 3 of his 9 assists in a 17-7 run to finish an 80-75 victory. Back on the road against Anadolu Efes Istanbul in Round 3, Teodosic’s shot was back as he hit 3 of 5 triples on the way to 15 points and dished 8 more assists. With the game tied 82-82 and less than 3 minutes to play, he made his last 2 assists and hit a three-pointer in a 0-7 spurt that sent CSKA on to win 87-93. Just 48 hours later, at home against Unics Kazan, Teodosic led CSKA in both scoring (16 points) and assists (11) – including a few unforgettable ones – to a 98-80 victory and a perfect 4-0 record for the month.

While leading the competition in assists, Teodosic committed just 9 turnovers in October. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.2 to 1 ranks second in the competition. His 10 three-pointers made are the fourth-most last month, as are his 11-of-11 free throws among players who have not missed yet from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Teodosic keeps climbing the EuroLeague’s all-time charts, as his 967 to date put him 11 assists away from overtaking third place from the great Theo Papaloukas and his 404 three-pointers are just 18 from moving him into second place behind Juan Carlos Navarro. While they await those milestones, CSKA fans can help celebrate with Teodosic his MVP for October award at an upcoming home game in Moscow.
