UKR - Pecherov aiming to be worth the wait for Wizards

From <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fibaeurope.com">http://www.fibaeurope.com</a><!-- w -->

WASHINGTON (NBA) - Washington Wizards fans are yet to see their 2006 first-round pick in action, but Ukrainian forward Oleksiy Pecherov is confident his NBA debut will be worth the wait.

Pecherov was made the 18th overall pick by the Wizards last year, but stayed in Europe to play another season with BC Kyiv in his homeland.

The 7ft, 210-pound Pecherov helped BC Kyiv clinch the regular-season crown in the Ukrainian Superliga, but it would fall short in the championship series, losing to Azovmash.

Even so, the 21-year-old is sure he benefited from the extra year's experience.

"Last year was good for me," Pecherov said after a Monday workout with the Wizards. "We played hard, we have a good coach and good players. We lost in the championship series, but I began to understand the game better and became a better team player."

Pecherov also played for BC Kyiv in the EuroCup, averaging 12 points and five rebounds per game as his team was eliminated in the first group stage.

"If you want to be a great player, you have to be good in all parts of the game," Pecherov added. "I try to work hard on all of them: rebounding, shooting and defense. I like rebounding

a lot and that is what I try to do in the game."

Even while locked into a title race in the Superliga, Pecherov did his best to follow the Wizards from afar and tracked the team as they made the play-offs, only to bow out after suffering injuries to stars Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler.

"It is difficult to see the game in Ukraine, but I followed the Wizards online," he said. "They did a great job, but in the play-offs they lost important players to injuries, so it was tough to keep

winning. I think they are doing a good job.

"I am looking forward to being on this team. I have all the confidence in my game and will try hard to help the Wizards win some games."

I have to post about this <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Linas Kleiza scored 41 points against Jazz last night. Great performance for a bench player. If only he could be as good for Lithuania NT <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

- TalkBasket - Jan 18, 2008

One of the best nights in his career so far. Kleiza is 3rd in Nuggets in points per game despite being a sub. American basketball fits him well with his athleticism and speed.

- Andrius - Jan 19, 2008

I don't really follow the NBA, but everyday I do check how the Lithuanians are doing. And every day there are average performances by all (well, most of the time) but this time I was shocked (pleasantly shocked). Kleiza is a great player and only 23. Hopefully, he'll become a regular.

That brightened up this, otherwise, rainy day. Literally.

Well Kleiza is doing well so far 21 and 24 points in the last two games. Žydr?nas Ilgauskas had 24pts last night.

- rikhardur - Mar 3, 2008

Türko?lu nearly achieved his second triple-double: 25 pts + 10 assists + 8 rebs as the Magic beat the Knicks.

Meanwhile, Michaël Piétrus had a terrific performance as the Warriors beat the Sixers: 23 pts (4-4 FG, 3-3 3pt, 6-7 FT) + 2 rebs + 2 assists + 1 block in 22 minutes.

Diamantides has repeatedly stated that he is NOT interested in the NBA. Drafter or not drafted.

Big Sofo should be easily #1 in that list if he was a decent athlete... because he has got all the skills it takes...

- rikhardur - Mar 8, 2008

Gasol was elected the Grizzlies' best ever player by a poll conducted by USA Today. Pau had 3.947 votes, Abdur-Rahim came second (2.165 votes) and Mike Miller third (2.125 votes).

- TalkBasket - Mar 9, 2008

Dirk Nowitzki became all time top scorer of Mavericks with 16644 points in 743 games. Previous record holder Rolando Blackman had 16643 in 865 games.

- rikhardur - Mar 9, 2008

Mehmet Okur converted a career-high 6 3-pointers, scoring 27 pts + 11 rebs + 3 steals, thus leading the Jazz to a 132-105 win over the Nuggets.

- rikhardur - Mar 12, 2008

Hedo Türko?lu had his career second triple-double with 23 pts + 13 assists + 10 rebs to help beat the Hawks. He's having an amazing season!

- rikhardur - Mar 21, 2008

Türko?lu had a career-high 39 pts (7-9 3pt) to go along with 6 rebs + 3 assists + 1 steal + 1 block. Unfortunately the Magic couldn't come up with a win against the Wizards.

Linas Kleiza had 23 pts (5/7 3pt) in 23 minutes as the Nuggets beat the Nets.

- rikhardur - Mar 24, 2008

Nowitzki injured his left leg in yesterday's game against the Spurs (which the Mavs lost 88-81) while going for a block in the 3rd quarter.

The lastest news...

Quote:DALLAS - Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks is out indefinitely with a moderate high ankle sprain and a mildly sprained knee.

It's a blow to the Mavericks' title hopes — and perhaps their chances of making the playoffs. The team announced the diagnosis after the reigning MVP got an MRI exam Monday, the day after he was injured during a game against San Antonio. He landed awkwardly on his left leg after running to block a shot.

Nowitzki said he's hoping to be out only one or two weeks. The regular season ends three weeks from Wednesday.

"I'm trying to see the positive and it could've been a lot worse," Nowitzki said, wearing a protective boot on his left ankle. "It could've been a season-ending injury or even career-ending."

He said the ankle and knee are both still stiff. He's trying to reduce swelling by putting them in ice every two hours, even when he sleeps. Doctors will check him out again Tuesday, then set a rehabilitation plan.

"Hopefully I can move where I can already go on the underwater treadmill a little bit in the next couple of days, so at least I can put some pressure on it and see how it feels," Nowitzki said.

Nowitzki has had plenty of traditional ankle sprains, but never a "high" one, which is closer to the shin. Local sports fans became familiar with the injury a few months ago, when Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens was out for three weeks then returned for the playoffs.

"Usually I'm good with recovering from injuries," Nowitzki said. "I know I'm not 20 any more, but I still feel young, my body feels young. So hopefully I can recover pretty quick." [...]

Rašo Nesterovi? scores 18 pts (8-11 FG, 2-2 FT), grabs 8 boards and blocks 1 shot in 27 minutes as the Raptors beat the Knicks (it isn't that difficult actually is it? <!-- s:p --><!-- s:p -->)

- rikhardur - Mar 30, 2008

Biedri?Å¡ had his best game of the month, scoring 17 pts, grabbing 17 rebs, blocking 2 shots and adding 3 assists. Unfortunately the Warriors could not win against the Nuggets (112-119).
