Alba beating Joventut away. That's what Euroleague this year has been all about, surprises after surprises and small teams being able to beat the sharks. Are big teams weaker, small teams stronger or is just a lax attitude by the former that has been providing these results? I really can't tell.

- TalkBasket - 01-08-2009

Zalgiris had to win by at least 15 points to reach Top 16 provided that both Nancy and Asseco Prokom lose final game. They nearly did it playing with 9 players only. The start looked promising but Nancy closed the gap and made Zalgiris catch them instead.

The largest lead of Zalgiris was 10 points until the 4th quarter. But for most of the time it was very close. Final score 105-94.

This game was historical because it was the first time in Euroleague when Zalgiris used only Lithuanian players.

Now the only hope to qualify for Top 16 is to beat Barca away.

- rikhardur - 01-09-2009

Spanoulis and Diamantidis handed Siena the win. A lost possession that gave Siena the win (great Carraretto with the three). Unbelievable.

Real Madrid allowing 21 points from Milano in the last period and scoring only 8 <!-- sOhmy --><!-- sOhmy -->

I've been on Plaza's side, but things are getting too ugly now.

- TalkBasket - 01-09-2009

Shall we see the same story Maccabi this season as it happened last year? They switched the coach and everything seems to go well.

Just look at that dunk by Michel Morandais from 0:40.

Some reaports from Maccabi OLY game:

I was there, at NOKIA

1)when the bus stopped and coach Gianakis stteped out some 100 Maccabi fans clapped their hands for show of graditude for OLY, when Nikola steeped out they sang his famous song, when Yotam stepped out there was a total silent... I guess Maccabi fan will never forgive him.

2)as usuaul when the announcer presented Nikola the fans in Nokia gave him a standing avation while Halperin was "BUZZED" all game long.

3)Gianakis had very bad decision during the game when he puuled of court superb Papaluks and in other moments when he couldn't react to maccabi energy showed by Caspi, Fischer and Arroyo.

4)Childres don't worth his salary... the guy was tested all game long to show some shooting skills and failed most of them, he did a good defensive job and drived well to the basket, but in Gianakis system u don't alllowed to do that in a fast mode, and it's hard to panetrate against a well orgenized zone that Maccbai showed.

5)Oly uses Yotam as a shooter most time, and I must say he does a good job doing so, but he has much more to show if only he would let to show it.

6)Eliyahu is a proven player, as for Caspi : the young prospect is shining latley under coach Gershon, if he will folows Eliyahu the benefite will be all Maccabi and Israel NT.

Cheers!

- TalkBasket - 01-09-2009

Nice report. Gershon is changing the team in a positive way. How far could Maccabi go in your opinion?

- GuyOFK - 01-09-2009

Hard to say... I think maccabi would give hard time to any team in europe with veteran Brown and explosive Arroyo, Eliyahu and Fischer are unpreditable, if Fizer will be back and shape it would look even batter, I allso suggest to watch CAspi and Simmons who might suprise all.

MVP: Immanuel McElroy (Alba Berlin):

26 pts (6/7 FG, 4/4 3pt 2/2 FT)

4 assists

3 rebs

1 steal

(33 minutes on court)

- kobimel - 01-09-2009

Maccabi ALWAYS find a way to win. They're winners, no matter which way you put it. Even this year they're a threat to reach the Final Four, and there anything can happen.

- CemSheed - 01-10-2009

Omri Casspi is one of the hottest prospects in European basketball. And a Marcus Brown image giving himself to the game with full concentration is something that deserves appreciation.

I was @ CSKA game Wednesday night, although i was in the middle of a week full of finals. But that's not because I see a chance for Efes to win the game, I've just missed watching CSKA live. That was the first night in this season with a full roster under Messina's coaching. And they outplayed us, out of question. It was great to see Trajan "The Alaskan Assassin" Langdon in Istanbul again.

I don't want to say that, but Cenk Akyol will never be a part of high-level basketball, apparently. We've been waiting for long time, but he had no contribution to the defensive or offensive ends.

We have a heterogeneous roster, have no depth in front court and Kasun's inexistence is not the only reason. A must-win situation at Madrid next week, but even if we beat them, we can't see a good future for this team. A team whose starting point guard is Ender Arslan? And a coach, who lectures his first choice in the PG position in the beginning of the season, namely Milos Vujanic. We all know the guy hasn't characteristics of a team-first point guard, he's more like an undersized SG, but you criticize him harshly in front of an audience for a non-stop 3 minutes. Aren't you the one who should be criticized by the supporters for this choice, Ataman?

- GuyOFK - 01-11-2009

I honestly can't understand what is going on with Efes Pilsen in last years.. I think that what this great club should have is stability with players roster. Efes should find this one star like in the old good days with Great Peter and build a team around him, a team that will creates it's own identity for 3-4 years with a good coach . What Efes is doing this days seems like a behavior of a reach Russian club that try to use large budget in order to reach back to the high levels, Pilsen is not like this, it;s a club with great tradition and history and should go back to it's old way and rebuilt itself .

Great points you touched on, my friend. But we actually don't have such a large budget as Russian clubs have (before recent crisis in Russia, of course). But that doesn't mean that the club uses its financial opportunities effectively. You see that, I (as a kind of Efes fan) see that, but some names are so strong in the club that we can't create a difference. You mentioned about Petar, just go on: Damir Mulaomerovic, Marcus Brown (well he is a SG, but he is the absolute LEADER on the court), Will Solomon (you should appreciate him, when he is concentrated on the game and play sharing and with his teammates)... But for 4 years the team has no point guard, I don't mean a qualitative one, the guards in that time interval are not even point guards: Marko Popovic, Ender Arslan, Horace Jenkins, Cuneyt Erden, Scoonie Penn, Rashad Wright, Milos Vujanic, Cliff Hammonds... We just had Baris Ermis, Aleksandar Rasic or Engin Atsur (today), but they couldn't get the minutes they deserved (OK, Rasic just spoiled it).

And one of the other characteristics of the team which was regarded as one of the bests in Europe: the big men duos, who understand each other well and have a perfect circulation of ball between them: Conrad McRae - Tamer Oyguc, then Predrag Drobnjak, Mirsad Turkcan - Huseyin Besok, after Mehmet Okur - Kaspars Kambala, maybe Kaya Peker, Goran Nikolic - Niksa Prkacin... But the tradition is stopped in the last two years of Mahmudi, and stopped (irreversibly I'm afraid) with Blatt. Blatt is not the one to blame, but we need a better GM with a vision (not Engin Ozerhun) and new young and elite Turkish coaches. Aydin Ors --> Ergin Ataman --> Oktay Mahmudi replacements were good ones, but we don't get back in this strategy. Blatt decision was a radical one, but they don't insist on it and thought they can easily return the old mechanism. But it's not such easy after you push the red button once, besides the old one is so old to be successful again.

Rebuilding is a necessity as you mentioned, but it's not a so-called 'sine qua non' that we should go back to the old way. The team, which has the huge financial strength of Anadolu Group, can be reborn from its ashes with the help of a reasonable rebuilding operation under a smart GM. And again for the reminder: Not Engin Ozerhun.

- GuyOFK - 01-12-2009

We all knows the great playres pllayed in Efes for the last years (some of them plyed for Maccabi <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />) and I think we all know what Efes had and it is doing this days, I just think that Efes should steak to a stable roster for 1-3 years with some adjustment each summer... I wish Efes all the best and sure hope for this club to climb high, this season or the next one, after all the small cycle of EL cup contenders (CSKA, PAO, Maccabi, TAU, OLY, Siena) should expand and it will be nice to see a Turkish team in this cycle after long time.
