Euroleague joins fight against HIV/AIDS - Black Urum - Feb 10, 2009

Barcelona, February 10, 2009. Euroleague Basketball is proud to announce that during 16 games over the next three weeks, its clubs, players, coaches and referees will actively join the "46664" campaign of Nelson Mandela. The seven-year-old campaign raises awareness and money to fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic afflicting poor communities. The special "46664" games, which form part of the Euroleague's Top 16 phase, will begin on Wednesday, February 11 and continue through Thursday, February 26.

All the Euroleague games played between those dates will feature a concerted effort to remind fans and viewers how they can help to stop HIV/AIDS. Players will warm up for each game wearing shirts with the 46664 foundation logo. Team captains will speak to the home fans just before each opening tip-off. And all players, referees and coaches will wear special "46664" tattoos, which was Mr. Mandela's prisoner number for 26 years before he ended apartheid in South Africa and became the country's president.

This special effort forms part of the Euroleague for Life Social Responsibility Program, which tries to give back to society with the hope of making some small difference in the lives of those who need it most. In this case, the Euroleague family strives to help Nelson Mandela deliver a message of HIV/AIDS prevention and hope to the youth and young adults of the world. Euroleague Basketball is aware that without the help of the players and clubs, not to mention the participation of our loyal fans, none of this would be possible. For that reason, we would like once again to thank all those who will take part in this project.

It is really good to see Euroleague participating in social projects as this.
