Two years ago "Lietuvos Rytas" general manager Jonas Vainauskas and some other specialists expressed their concern that Lithuanian BB faced some sort of decay (debatable position, IMO). Now situation seems radically changed on the positive note and only PG position still remains highly questionable. I'll try to examine in my opinion the most potential prospects, you're well come to discuss, disagree or to add something. Also, don't forget the poll Smile

Extra talented group

Donatas Motiejūnas. 213cm, Benneton. 19yo. Internationally estimated as one of the most interesting prospect from Old continent. Lefty center (or power forward) is highly versatile offensively while suffers at the defensive end with the positioning and rebounding. His personality might be an issue also. Currently he's having constant minutes at the Benneton and seems to show at least a decent results for his age at that level.

Look Motiejūnas' thread here- http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/thread-...nas-thread

Jonas Valančiunas. 210cm, Lietuvos Rytas. 17 yo. Another already internationally noticed prospect with even better presumption of his NBA future (DraftExpress). Otherwise Motiejūnas, Valančiūnas feels very comfortable at the both ends of the court, but he's way more of a typical center at the offense. He produces great athleticism, quickness and mobility for his high. Good rebounder and blocker, shows some nice spin moves and face to face game. Already showing unexpectedly matured game for 17yo at the LKL champion team Lietuvos Rytas.

Valančiūnas' thread here- http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/thread-...nas-thread

Mindaugas Kuzminskas. 205cm. Šiauliai. 20yo. While most people see Motiejūnas and Valančiūnas as the most talented Lithuanian prospects Kuzminskas might end up as not less talented versatile forward as well. Not too much internationally promoted player showed great parfomance at Eurocup this year and seems getting better all the time. Dangerous from 3p line, good at penetrating and highly presented in the paint where he can fight with power forwards while he's more like SF. Great personality and a very little feedback from NBA scouts, so he's a dark horse Smile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzZ6vuu3EkI

Martynas Gecevičius. 193cm. Lietuvos Rytas. Finally find him self as the key player for Rytas and had a great Euroleague season. Deadly shooter, good passer and hight IQ. That's his weapons. What he's really should work on it's his athleticism. Some more muscles and quickness would help him a lot.

Other worth mentioning prospects (This section is without point guards who will be excluded. Each of every player I'll discuss on the progress, later on)

Martynas Pocius. Žalgiris.
Adas Juškevičius. Žalgiris.
Deivydas Gailius (Šiualiai)
Arvydas Šikšnius (Šiauliai)
Vytenis Lipkevičius (Aisčiai)
Eimantas Bendžius (Perlas)
Vaidas Čepukaitis (Aisčiai)
Evaldas Kairys (Perlas)

Point guard group

Mantas Kalnietis. 195cm, Žalgiris, 23yo. Average skills for point guard and average skills for shooting guard. Despite this, he seems like the most potential point guard after Jasikevičius in Lithuania at the given time. His main and most dangerous gun is fast brake. At the positional game he's struggling with ballhandling and quickness what doesn't help him to have enough sparkle for creativity and energy that point guard should have. All in all he became a decent point guard, but he's not the world class material IMO.

Žygimantas Janavičius. 192cm, Aisčiai, 21yo. Couple of years ago he was treated as one of the most promising Lithuanian prospects, but the transition to the men BB isn't that fast as expected. Lefty guards has very good physical fundamentals what really helps him at the defensive end and penetration in offense. His ball handling is kinda questionable, but he's really quick and mobile enough to control the ball at the different tempo. Pretty good passer. The disadvantages lies at the offense while he's not a perfect shooter and he's not stable from down town (he has at least decent 3p shot though) and suffers with some shooting situations. He's lacking some flexibility and tends to lose his connection with other guys. Despite that, he's still one of the most promising Lithuanian PG and has some extra qualities like athleticism, quickness and hardly stoppable lefty lay ups.

Žydrūnas Kelys. 188cm, Rytas, 22yo. After being fired from Žalgiris due to unacceptable life style for sportsmen (and almost leaving sports career)he regain his confidence and shape at second Rytas' team Perlas and now he's with Rytas roster(injured ATM). I would say his playing style is a little bit familiar with Tony Parker. He's very energetic, quick and highly coordinated guard. He can nail a triple and he can go inside whenever he likes. Tends to take a risky shot or pass what leads to 6 or 7 TOs per game (reminds young Jasikevičius at that point). These wasted years might cost him badly while he'll turn to 23 soon, but if he will get his transition to the highest level soon he might end up like the most potential point guard in Lithuania. He really surprised with his fighting temper while leading Perlas to the victory against Žalgiris at the legendary Sport Hall (Kaunas). Surely one of the biggest discoveries of the LKL season. Next year, he will start with Rytas and that means a new level of his career.

Šarūnas Vasiliauskas
Aidas Viskontas
Augustas Pečiukevičius
Ovidijus Varanauskas
This is a great thread Thup You may also add links to already existing threads next to player names so that people who want to discuss specifically one player could go directly to the right thread.

I think that your player reviews are spot on. Kuzminskas is definitely underrated. He should get more exposure next season in Žalgiris. If he manages to adjust to a new level quickly then scouts will surely notice him. His brother was one of my most hated players Laugh

Out of those four top prospects you listed, I would pick Valančiūnas as the most promising. The main reason of my choice is his age. He's basically the youngest of all players yet he is playing well at LKL level. There are still many things left for him to improve and I think he has just the right type of personality needed to progress as a player.

Šikšnius is the biggest surprise to me this season. Having joined Šiauliai from Sakalai he instantly became one of the key players there. He doesn't play in a typical European way. Because of his impressive jump he makes many spectacular dunks. And yet he is still quite good shooter and is not afraid to take decisive shots. Hopefully he won't run after money in summer and won't join some team which would stop his progress. I'm also surprised not to hear any rumours about clubs interested in him.

Point guards is our biggest issue so it is good to see that we at least have some prospects. Though I still can't see anyone who would have the talent to become a top level point guard. It seems that Kalnietis is playing for a long time yet he is still among the prospects. The most notable improvement made by Kalnietis is his three-point shot. Other parts of his game haven't evolved much. Of course the experience of playing in Euroleague made him more mature and smarter. But that's about it.

When Janavičius started playing for Žalgiris last season everyone was saying "this guy has balls". And what happened later? A player who seemed to have a tough character on the court complained that he is unable to cope with the pressure at the club. Of course it's hard to play when every mistake you make means that you are being put on the bench instantly. But on the other hand Janavičius rarely did anything good on the court before being sent to Aisčiai.

Kelys will have the chance to show whether he is ready to make the next step at Rytas. Out these three point guard, I like his style play of most of all. You made a good that he has wasted lots of time after he was released by Žalgiris. If Kurtinaitis stays at Rytas, his experience could help Kelys improve his game a lot. The fact that he managed to put himself together and climb the ladder to such level that Rytas eventually signed shows that he is serious now.
I'm glad you noticed Kelys as well Cool This guy is underrated really. I watched many games with him playing for Perlas and he managed to overplay Kalnietis anytime Perlas played against Žalgiris. Sure he had all freedom in his hands, but still his skills and leadership are promising. Despite the fact he's out at least for two months more, I hope he'll be invited to second NT team camp (having in mind point guard issue I believe Kemzūra could examine all our young PG as Janavičius, Vasiliauskas, Viskontas and Kelys or at least to take few of them).

And yeah I can't wait to see Kuzminskas playing for Žalgiris. Having in mind how current young players are struggling for Žalgiris (and not only youngsters actually), I wouldn't surprised if this player will become some sort of symbol of new beginning Smile (something what happened with Pocius at the start of the season...)

It seems there were some plans by Rytas. That was predictable. How many players Rytas signed from Šiauliai in recent years?

Quote:Lietuvos Rytas sign Arvydas Siksnius

Lithuanian champions continue building the team for the future by signing yet another prospect. 22-year-old guard Arvydas Siksnius confirmed to newspapaer "Siauliu krastas" that he signed a multi-year contract with Lietuvos Rytas. It is still unknown whether the player will wear the jersey of his new team right from next season or will he have to wait for his debut with Rytas. Siksnius himself said that it is most likely that he will be playing for Rytas already next season.

Arvydas Siksnius won LKL dunk contest in 2009 at the age of 21. He joined Siauliai before this season and instantly found to be an important player of his new team. Before moving to Siauliai Siksnius represented another club from Vilnius - Sakalai, a team known for once in a while producing players who are signed by the top clubs.

Siksnius made his debut in Eurocup this season. Even though Siauliai won only one game, Siksnius felt comfortable on a bigger stage as he averaged 14.8 points per game (Free-throws: 81.5%, 2PTS: 52%, 3PTS: 48.6%). His stats in LKL are a little less impressive - 11 points per game (Free-throws: 62.7%, 2PTS: 54.3%, 3PTS: 32.6%).

Lietuvos Rytas has already signed two other promising players - Jonas Valanciunas and Zydrunas Kelys.

New York Knicks vice president Glen Grunwald and international scout Kevin Wilson attended Šiauliai - Techasas game yesterday in order to watch Mindaugas Kuzminskas play. He is attracting the interest of NBA teams and could even send an application for this year's NBA draft.

It is justifiable in your opinion or just senseless hype?

Well, Kuzminskas is definitely one of the top prospects in Lithuania. If he continues to progress then he could become a good player. So I'd say that this was a deserved attention. He'll be playing for Žalgiris next season and will have the chance to prove his skills in Euroleague.
He's not a dark horse anymore, I guess Smile
Continuing the discussion about Mindaugas Kuzminskas I have to mention how fast he's getting stronger and more confident. He totally dominated in the quarterfinals against Techasas. One could say Techasas is a weak team, but the guy finished with 27 points against Rytas the last time they met them and only a little miracle saved Rytas that day. Looking forward to see how he'll look against Žalgiris in LKL semis, and against Rytas in BBL semis (If I'm not wrong). Kuzminskas averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds per game in LKL, he's second one at the MVP ranking.

He could easily debut for NT this summer if Lithuania wouldn't be filled with quality players at SF/PF position.
Kuzminskas will participate in NBA drafts 2010.

He will probably be just trying to gather as much interest from NBA teams and then cancel his application. Even though he was noticed by NBA scouts, it was too close to the draft for him to get drafted this year.
Some attention for Kuzminskas from Europeanprospects.com. http://www.europeanprospects.com/1989-bo.../#comments
I think Vaidas Ȍepukaitis deserves a closer look. This guy was in radar of NBA scouts couple of years before and he was one of the most interesting bigs along with Motiejūnas - http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Vaid...itis-1301/

Unfortunately some injuries slowed down his career and he seemed to struggle while integrating in men BB. But it seems that this guy is still one of the most interesting Lithuanian bigs, currently playing in Utena Juventus. It was pleasure to watch how he humiliated Nalga in the first quarter against Rytas and he had a good fight with Valančiūnas. He is a very solid blocker and rebounder, maybe a little bit lacking weight for completing these skills. At offense he's trusting on mid rage jumpers and p&r situations and he resembles late Ilgauskas at this point. He used to show some post moves, but obviously forgot that these days. Overall he has a good feeling for the game in offense and has some great skills finding the ball under the boards. Despite that he obviously struggling with consistency and foul trouble. Drawing a conclusion, he still needs a lot to improve, but in my radar he is standing as a third C/PF prospect among Valančiūnas and Motiejūnas. Surely a NT material in the future.
Some of the prospects mentioned in the first post (which was made more than 6 years ago) failed to make any serious progress with regards to what expectations were put on them. Valančiūnas and Motiejūnas obviously are having the best careers among the top prospects back in the day.

The main difference these days is that more and more prospects are choosing foreign clubs as the place for their development.

So who are the top prospects these days? Again, the list is dominated big men. Some names of the top of my head:

Domantas Sabonis (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Tadas Sedekerskis (Baskonia)
Arnas Velička (Barcelona)
Arnoldas Kulboka (Bamberg)
Martynas Varnas (Žalgiris-2)
Laurynas Birutis (Žalgiris-2)
Aistis Piliauskas (Lietuvos rytas)
Martynas Echodas (Šiauliai)
Tomas Balčiūnas (Sevilla)
