VEF Riga tabs Kaspars Berzins

VEF Riga improved its frontcourt for its Eurocup debut next season by inking big man Kaspars Berzins to a one-year deal, the club announced Monday. Berzins (211, 24) arrives from CB Caceres 2016, where he averaged 6.7 points and 3.7 rebounds in 18 Spanish second division games last season. He started the 2009-10 season with Spanish side Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada Madrid but was sent on loan to Caceres in February. Berzins has also played for Barons/LMT Riga and Skonto Riga in his native Latvia, as well as for Unicaja in Spain. He is also a regular member of the Latvian national team. Berzins helped Barons to win the Latvian League and the FIBA EuroCup titles in 2008. VEF announced that its team structure in 2010-11 will feature four elite Latvian players, four foreigners and four young talents, all coached by 2009 Eurocup winner Rimas Kurtinaitis, who joined the team earlier on this summer.
