Raze, just take a look at the 2010 roster. It was a gutsy team to put out there. If Kevin Durant would have had an off game, they may have been exposed.

I think I get what your saying. Brazil and Russia games were close. It depends on how you define luck. When I was in 7th grade I was a nerdy kid that was in no means on the top of the popularity hierarchy. Whenever my name was mentioned in the circle of popular girls or any girl for that matter,a resounding "ewwwww" was heard. So you can imagine my surprise in may the last month of my 7th grade year I was invited to the birthday party of the head cheerleader of the middle school. I consider that luck. I also consider it lucky that during game of spin the wheel I got to kiss said popular girl. That was all luck.

In contrast Kevin Durant at the tender age of 23 just won his 3rd NBA scoring title last week. That's a testament to his skill not luck. None of the foreign teams could put pressure Durant, many times because of USA excellent ball movement and player movement Durant was left wide open. yet it just wasn't Durant. Team USA showed that they could consistently out rebound opponents. Tyson Chandler, Lamar Odom, Kevin Love outplayed their counter parts just about every game. Lamar Odom the NBA 6th man of the year was more formidable than most any of his counterparts. No team had an answer for Andre Igudola. USA went undefeated and captured gold. Brazil was the only team that brought USA to final seconds.

IMHO luck had little or nothing to do with USA winning gold. The roster is stacked with guys who were excellent players who outperformed their opponents. Even If Durant didn't go off every game no team besides Brazil showed they could over match the defense of team USA. The most remarkable feat of team USA was how they kept teams from scoring for long stretches in games. That was an act of skill not luck.

Quote:eport: U.S. receives extension

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo won't have to submit the 12-man roster for the men's Olympic basketball team until July 8, according to a USA Today report.

According to the report, Colangelo asked for and received an extension on selecting the final roster. The original deadline set by the U.S. Olympic Committee was June 18, but Colangelo will now have until July 8, two days after the start of training camp in Las Vegas.

The U.S. recently added college player of the year Anthony Davis and Oklahoma City's James Harden to its pool of finalists.

After losing Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose to their injury list, the Americans are back to 18 healthy players in the pool, allowing for a 12-man roster and six alternates.

Davis led Kentucky to the NCAA championship, winning the Most Outstanding Player award at the Final Four, and is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. Harden, a guard, is one of the NBA's top sixth men.

The remaining healthy finalists are: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook, Tyson Chandler, Kevin Love, Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon and Lamar Odom -- though Odom's status is uncertain after his poor season that resulted in the Dallas Mavericks deactivating him.
Chris Bosh has a strained abdominal muscle. He may be out for 3 months.

I feel sorry for him and the Heat who have been playing great but this is good news from a Team USA perspective (I think Chandler/Griffin/Love/Davis is a more formidable front court).
Not surprising but Coach K says he'll be done with Team USA after the Olympics.

Quote:DALLAS -- Mike Krzyzewski says he thinks the London Olympics will be his last coaching the United States.

The Duke coach was brought in before the 2008 Games to revive a struggling Olympic team, which had finished a disappointing third in Athens.

Krzyzewski and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo established a player pool to help give the program structure, and the result has been a return to the top of the international game.

The Americans won the gold medal in Beijing behind Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

Two years later, they won the world title with a completely different roster.

Krzyzewski says coaching the U.S. team has been "the ultimate honor," and he'll continue to be involved with USA Basketball after stepping down.

Colangelo, meanwhile, said Monday he would stick around after London to provide the continuity that's been so key to the Americans' resurgence.

I'm so proud and happy for him!!!!

His work and effort paid off by the best way possible!!!

Congrats Taj!!!

That's almost impossible but I'd really like to see him in London!!!

Way to go Taj!
