Quote:Following the decision taken at its last Central Board meeting, held on the 8th and 9th of December 2007 in Chicago (USA), the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) opened the bidding process for the 2014 World Championship on 10th of January 2008.

With almost two and a half months still to go until the closing date for the sending of Letters of Intent confirming an interest in hosting the event, FIBA is pleased to confirm that the Danish Basketball Federation (DBBF) has become the third candidate to express an interest in bidding for the organization of the 17th edition of the FIBA World Championship, FIBA's premier competition.

FIBA is pleased to see an emerging basketball country such as Denmark joining the two perennial European powerhouses of Spain and France.

Anyone knows if Denmark has required venues? FIBA could choose them to increase the popularity of basketball in Denmark. Although France and Spain are the favourites.
Russia is the last country to join the race for hosting 2014 World Champs. Countries may apply until April 30th.
FIBA and ULEB are always interested in money so they are delighted that Denmark would host it. But I think that's a bad idea because you couldn't feel the basketball atmosphere in that country. France would be ideal for me because Spain already had a European championship last year.
Personally I want a European country to take it first of all. But not one of the big Central Europe ones but rather a 'new' country.

For example I'd like to see Denmark take but I would also like Russia take it so basketball travels a bit East and the one frenzy basketball summer could generate a lot of future interest in Russia although they got other sports too...

Quote:ITA – Gigli, Italy target 2014

ROME (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Italy big man Angelo Gigli has expressed the hope that his country will be chosen to stage the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

The 25-year-old Lottomatica Roma big man played a prominent role for the Azzurri at the 2006 event in Japan.

China and Spain are also vying for the 2014 competition. All three recently presented bids to FIBA in Geneva.

"For sure, it would be very important," Gigli said to FIBA.com.

"For all the movement of the national team, for all the Italian players, we hope that Rome and Italy can reach this goal but it's not easy.

"We have so many years before then but we could organize it very well."

Injury prevented Gigli from playing this year for Italy in EuroBasket 2009 qualifying and his absence, along with the no-shows of NBA players Danilo Gallinari, Andrea Bargnani and Marco Belinelli contributed to the national side's failure to reach Poland.

The Italians can still book a place via the Additional Qualifying Round.

If Italy finish top of Group B that also includes France and Finland, they will take on the winner of a Group A that has Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal and Belgium.

"I want to come back to the national team," Gigli said.

"This period (for us) isn't very good. We had a summer that wasn't very good so everyone wants to come back and deliver what we had some years ago.

"It will be very hard, but we can do it because in Italy, basketball is very important. We want to do something special."

Many are predicting that France will beat Italy to Group B supremacy and go on to reach Poland.

"We have to see which players come, whether the NBA players will come or not," Gigli said.

"In the past two or three summers, we've had big injury problems. We hope that everyone will stay well.

"Coach (Carlo) Recalcati will choose the team and then we have to show something on the court."

Quote:ESP - Rubio: "Playing the FIBA World Champ with the support of our fans would be fantastic"

MADRID (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Ricky Rubio, an 'absolute beginner' in the Spanish Senior National Team last summer, became in Beijing 2008 the youngest basketball player (18 years old) in history to have ever won an Olympic medal.

Rubio, a current true reference in Spanish basketball, will be almost 24 years of age when the 2014 FIBA World Championship takes place. Everything seems to indicate that Ricky will not only be an undisputed member of the Spanish national team in 2014, but also one of its key pillars.

Are you excited about the possibility of playing the 2014 FIBA World Championship at home?

Definitively. The fact of playing at home always provides you with an extra motivation and a surplus of excitement. I have been fortunate to play three European Championships in Spain and I know, first hand, that playing with the support and encouragement of the fans is something absolutely fantastic which brings even more excitement to everyone involved.

Most of the “Golden Boys”, the World Champions in Japan 2006, will be 33 or 34 years old in 2014. Do you think that any of them could still be on the team?

All players are very good technically. It will obviously depend on their physical shape. But I would love it if they could make it to the FIBA 2014 World Championship.

The Spanish Basketball Federation (FECool is preparing a very ambitious and exciting candidature. Do you think that Spanish basketball deserves the organization of a championship like this?

Yes, without the slightest doubt. In recent years our national team has clinched a FIBA World Championship and a silver medal at the Olympic Games, thus meaning that Spanish basketball and our team are doing a great work and fully deserve to be selected as hosts of the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

Do you think that the group of players that could be the core of the Spanish national team in 2014 can aspire as much, can have as high expectations as the current squad?

Yes, no doubt about that. Over the past few years the Spanish League (ACCool is witnessing the rising of some very young and extremely talented players. And I believe that within six years our team will continue to be a top contender on the international scene.

In your opinion, what are the strongest weapons of Spain's candidature? What are the assets that you would like to mention to the FIBA Central Board members in order to convince them that the Spanish candidature is the best possible one?

Spain has already proven its great experience and professionalism in organizing sports events. In addition, our country has everything needed in order to organize a successful FIBA World Championship. We have great supporters, a fantastic weather, good basketball arenas, delicious food... And, last but not least, we are extremely keen to work for basketball and to help our sport grow.

Quote:ITA – Crimi reconfirms Italian government backing for 2014 FIBA World Championship bid

BOLOGNA (2014 FIBA World Championship) - The Italian government has reconfirmed its support for the country’s bid to host the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

The Secretary of State for Sport, On. Rocco Crimi, spoke at the induction ceremony for the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had already thrown his full backing behind the country’s bid last October when he greeted FIBA President Bob Elphinston and FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann at his office in Palazzo Chigi, Rome.

Crimi was also at that October meeting.

Italian Basketball Federation president Dino Meneghin was at Sunday’s presentation and spoke about the bid.

"Our basketball in general is ready to host the World Championship of 2014,” Meneghin said.

“We have presented a wonderful candidature and now FIBA have the final say."

Spain and China are also hoping to host the 2014 FIBA World Championship with FIBA set to make its decision on the weekend of May 23-24 in Geneva.

Quote:ESP – Pau Gasol would relish playing 2014 FIBA World Championship in Spain

MADRID (2014 FIBA World Championship) – Pau Gasol was the most valuable player of the 2006 FIBA World Championship when Spain captured the gold medal in Japan.

Now the international hoops icon says he wants to play in 2014 if his country is named as host of the prestigious event.

China and Italy are also candidates to stage that World Championship, with basketball’s world governing body FIBA to announce where the event will be held on the weekend of May 23-24 in Geneva.

“It’s too soon to talk about something that is a little bit far away but if I feel right and healthy, I will play at the (2014) World Championship,” Gasol said in a statement issued by the Spanish Basketball Federation.

“Let’s see how I feel, but I hope to reach 2014 in good form.”

Gasol, who will be 34 in 2014, has already played in front of his country’s fans in a major international basketball even when EuroBasket 2007 was staged in Spain.

He almost led his national team to a gold medal, but his jump shot at the death in the final against Russia bounced off the backboard and then rolled around the rim before staying out.

Gasol still has fond memories of that tournament.

“Playing a great championship at home is an experience that I would be happy to repeat,” he said.

“The experience of the EuroBasket 2007 was beautiful.”

Gasol, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, was recently voted FIBA Europe’s Player of the Year for 2008.

Quote:ITA – Messina – 2014 FIBA World Championship crucial for Italy

ROME (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Former Italy national team boss Ettore Messina has thrown his full support behind the country’s bid to stage the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

Italy, Spain and China are the countries that want to host the prestigious event.

Messina says that if Italy are chosen, the tournament would start a basketball renaissance in the country.

"For Italian basketball, the World Championship of 2014 is a great aim that could succeed in unifying the efforts of the entire movement,” Messina said.

"It´s important to experience it together…

"It´s an event that doesn´t end because of the candidature. To be able to host it would be a starting point, not an arrival point.

“We will have to show cohesion on the court and off it to be at the level of such an important and prestigious tournament."

Messina has achieved legendary status in the game after leading the Azzurri, and coaching great sides like Virtus Bologna, Benetton Treviso and currently, CSKA Moscow.

Under Messina, Virtus captured two European crowns while CSKA Moscow have been to the last three Euroleague finals, winning twice.
