He won't resign yet after all, will stay until the end of the month by club request.

Quote:New Portugal coach Moncho Lopez has called for major changes in the country's basketball league.

Lopez, who will attempt to lead the country into EuroBasket 2009 in Poland with qualifying games against Latvia, FYROM and Estonia later this year, believes that the Portuguese should limit the number of foreigners at clubs to just three "in order to give a chance to young players."

"The Portuguese league needs to adopt a more realistic approach and consider that four foreigners per club is too much," he said.

Lopez, meanwhile, has again spoken of the big challenge he faces as the replacement for Valentyn Melnychuk, who did so well last year as Portugal advanced to the quarter-final qualifying round.

He will not be short of confidence, however, after doing so well in his tenure as Spain coach.

Under Lopez, Spain reached the final of EuroBasket 2003 in Sweden where they lost to Lithuania.

"This is a very complicated challenge, a tremendous task to replace Valentyn Melnychuk because he achieved notable success," Lopez said. "But I am motivated."

You're wrong, actually more basketball is needed <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> I'm fed up with football, it's totally an unhealthy obsession here believe me <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I couldn't agree more. It's not as if Portugal is that good in football. Portugal basketball NT was a harder opponent for Greece basketball NT than the Portugal football NT was for Greece football NT... <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Usually you can see a team from lower division winning a cup in football. It's certainly something special in basketball. Do the cup winners get a place in FIBA Eurocup?

Good question, I actually don't know <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> You know, Portuguese basketball has been out of European competitions for so long that one starts getting used to it... Ovarense this year revived something long forgotten unfortunately.
