Quote:POR – Portugal players take responsibility and get the job done

LISBON (EuroBasket Qualifying) - If Portuguese fans were proud of their basketball team when they made an unexpected run to EuroBasket 2007 in Spain, those same basketball supporters may just feel even more satisfied after the efforts of their hoops heroes this summer.

Portugal, some might say, rose from the dead to stay in contention for a place in next year’s final round in Poland.

They won three consecutive games, capped by last Saturday’s 93-92 thriller at home against Latvia, to finish their Division A campaign with three victories and three defeats and earn a place in next year’s Additional Qualifying Round.

Miguel Miranda buried his fifth three-pointer of the game six seconds from the end to secure the win over the Latvians.

"Those first three defeats were a lesson for all of us," Miranda said.

"The main reason for that failure was us, the players, more than anyone else.

"Not much has changed in our team. The only thing was that we, the players, had the obligation to do better, and we did.”

There was one big development after EuroBasket 2007, when Portugal upset Latvia in the group stage to stay alive in the competition and then defeated Israel in the quarter-final qualifying round.

The coach of Portugal, Valentyn Melnychuk, resigned to take the reins of Ukraine and was replaced by Moncho Lopez, the boss of Spain’s silver-medal winning team at EuroBasket 2003.

Francisco Jordão also made himself unavailable, which wasn’t well received in Portugal.

The biggest problem for this year’s Portuguese team was injuries.

Joao Gomes, Portugal’s very athletic forward at EuroBasket 2007, was hurt and Miranda was among numerous others who were not fully fit.
He missed the team’s 79-70 home defeat to Estonia on September 3 which started their three-game losing streak at the start of qualifying.

"We had seven injured players during qualifying,” the 29-year-old Miranda said.

“I have never witnessed anything similar since I joined the national team."

In the big win over Latvia, Miranda played all 40 minutes.

"It was a victory for our team," Miranda said. "It was nothing personal. We deserved to win more than anyone."

Now Miranda and his teammates can go into their club seasons feeling good about their summer. Next year, the battles will start all over again.

Only one of the teams in the Additional Qualifying Round will reach the EuroBasket in Poland.

"I keep considering that Portugal has the same chances as any other team to seal a place to the EuroBasket," Miranda said.

In the Additional Qualifying Round, Portugal will face France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Belgium and Finland.

Players surrounded Miranda and congratulated the 29-year-old after his game-winning shot last Saturday, but he tried to play down his role.

"No, I don‘t feel like a national hero," he said. "It was just a victory of the team. I was fortunate to have the ball in my hands at that moment and made the three-pointer. Any other team-mate could have done it."

Quote:Costa Is Clear About Portugal's Potential

It takes a special type of player to turn in the kind of performance José Costa did this summer with Portugal - one year after the huge disappointment of missing out on a EuroBasket that he had dreamed of playing in one day.

After a bit-part role in qualifying games under former boss Valentyn Melnychuk, Costa didn't make the team that competed in the Final Round in Spain last year.

Costa was included in Moncho Lopez's squad for this year's qualifiers, though.

After playing and failing to score in two of Portugal's first three Division A games - all defeats - Costa did his best imitation of a super hero and helped rescue his national team.

Instead of being on a team that suffered relegation, Costa sparked the side in the last two games and helped them reach next year's EuroBasket Additional Qualifying Round.

He smiled in vindication as he walked off the court following the 93-92 win over Latvia that leveled Portugal's Group B record to 3-3.

Several days after the achievement, Costa, who had 19 points in a win over FYROM and 29 in the triumph over Latvia, admitted to Basketball World News: "After the EuroBasket 2007, I really considered retiring from international competition.

"This summer, due to the absence because of family reasons of (Portugal's Euro2007 playmaker) Filipe da Silva, coach Moncho explained to me that he needed a player with my qualities.

"I found that attitude very humble, and I accepted it.

"He explained what he wanted from me, and that was enough to show the coach‘s ability to communicate and changed my mind."

Melnychuk left Portugal to coach his native Ukraine, and they won just once in six games.

The Portuguese looked as if they might be even worse after opening the qualifying campaign with three losses in a row.

"We took some time to assimilate the coach's philosophy. When we did it, we responded well with three victories," Costa said.

"We never considered relegation."

Making History

That Costa had some big games this summer will not have come as a surprise to many, even considering his reduced role in recent times.

He'd done it before.

No player in the country has more caps.

Zé Costa, as he is known, and the retired Luis Silva, each have 133 caps.

One more appearance and Costa will become a reference point.

Will he play on, especially considering the way he signed off this summer by leading the Portuguese past Latvia?

"I know that my age does not help, but I will keep working and see what decision is to be taken."

Whether he plays or not, Costa says Portugal have every chance to reach next year's Final Round in Poland.

The Portuguese take on Italy, France, Finland, Belgium and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Additional Qualifying Round with just one place in Poland up for grabs.

"We have nothing to lose against all those contenders," Costa said.

"We acknowledge that all teams are aiming to go to Poland, but we will have a word to say."

Costa, who is turning from player to coach, and is working with youngsters at his native Figueira da Foz, believes the future of the national team is in good hands with Spaniard Lopez.

"Moncho is the right man to change the course of basketball in the country," Costa said.

"He is very straight forward, knows what he wants from every player.

"He is a very correct man, whether he is on or off the court. Portugal has a lot to win with him."

Guimarães signed F/C Harvey Thomas (26, 2.05m).
Lusitânia will definitely not take part in the new league this season after 3 attempts to do so were turned down. Administrative problems were the reason. The vacant place will not be replaced by another club.
