2008-11-16

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Defending champions Guangdong Dongguan Bank kicked off the journey for the fifth title in six seasons with an easy 107-92 victory over Fujian SBS in the first round of the Chinese Men's Basketball Association league (CBA) on Sunday.

Guard Zhu Fangyu came off from brilliant performances of the Beijing Olympic Games, having 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 30 minutes playing-time for the host team.

Chris Porter had the game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds in 42:50 minutes while Matt Frejie added 24 points in 44:50 minutes for Fujian.

Guangdong won the championships during the span of 2002-05 seasons but lost it to the Bayi Rockets in the 2006-07 season.

The Liaoning Hunters, last season's runners-up, made a stuttering start to the new season, losing to the Shanxi Zhongyu 94-74 at home.

Failing to renew the contract with Nigerian Olumide Oyedeji and American Jamal Sampson, who had fueled the team's drive last season, Liaoning had to force their pace and played catch-up most of the time.

The host team had leveled the match at 47-all in the third quarter, but the players could not keep the consistency in the remaining time.

Shanxi's players made nine three-pointers, five more than that of Liaoning.

Oyedeji, playing for Shanxi in the new season, reeled off 23 points, 24 rebounds and nine assists. Zhai Jinshuai added 23.

Li Xiaoxu led the host team with 26 points. Yang Ming and Liu Xiangtao had 13 and 12 apiece.

American Priest had 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Shandong Gold past the newly-promoted Tianjin Ronggang 94-74 at home.

Sun Jie notched up 20 points, 5 assists and 5 steals for Shandong while another American Mackeroy Tuck added 17.

The Shaanxi Yalv also had a solid start at home, shooting 11 three-pointers to prevail over visitors Changchun Dacheng with a 110-87 drubbing.

Six players of Shaanxi had double digits, with Lee Benson scoring a game-high 23 points. Chen Zhaosheng added 22.

Elsewhere, the Beijing ducks lost to the Xinjiang Guanghui 101-97 overtime, the Zhejiang Guangsha beat the Shanghai Sharks 113-107, the Zhejiang Cyclones beat the Qingdao Double Stars 100-92and the Yunnan Honghe lost to the Bayi Rockets 118-97.

This is the first season that the league lift off the playing-time limit to the foreign players, who were given five-quarter playing time in total in one match.

In a match played on Saturday, the Dongguan Marco Polo beat the Jiangsu Dragons 107-101 overtime.

Quote:CHN - Liu Wei rapped severely for Muoneke incident

BEIJING (CBA) - China's Olympic point guard Liu Wei and his Shanghai Sharks teammate Cai Lang have been slapped with 10-game suspensions and 50,000 RMB (£5,000) fines for their roles in an ugly incident involving Nigerian international Gabe Muoneke of Yunnan.

The post-game bust-up stemmed from an altercation that happened during Shanghai’s clash with Yunnan on November 28.

The incident was captured on video tape, which the CBA reviewed before announcing the punishment.

"The incident was abominable and serious in nature, casting a terrible influence over society and seriously harming the CBA's brand and reputation," the CBA said in a statement.

The bans could not have come at a worse time for Shanghai, who have opened the season with 10 straight defeats.

Their latest setback was a 113-99 defeat to second-place Dongguan (8-2).

Shanghai were also fined 100,000 RMB.

Xinjiang, the team of former China center Mengke Bateer, are leading the CBA standings at 9-1 after their 110-100 triumph over Tianjin Rongcheng.

Mengke had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists in that latest victory while Juan Mendez and Myron Allen led the way with 25 and 24 points, respectively.

Defending CBA champions Guandong, Jiangsu, Bayi, Shanxi Zhongyu - the team now coached by former NBA boss Bob Weiss - are all 7-3.

Quote:CHN – Fit-again Wang returns to Bayi in their hour of need

BEIJING (CBA) – Bayi are struggling to reach the play-offs in China’s top flight.

Only the first eight sides will advance to the CBA post-season and so far, Bayi haven’t made the grade.

Without big national team power forward/center Wang Zhizhi while he continued his rehabilitation from knee surgery, the team suffered an 87-86 defeat at Shaanxi on Sunday.

Bayi coach Adijiang Chang Bin declared after that he is still upbeat about the team’s chances.

“We are only two wins behind from the eighth position,” Adijiang said. “The opportunity is ahead of us.”

Nevertheless, the setback to Shaanxi left Bayi in 11th place and added to the sense of urgency that was gripping the club ahead of their clash with Beijing, a team that was sixth in the CBA table.

Wang, sensing his teammates were in dire need of a lift, decided it was time to go from rehab to playing.

He spoke of his intention to come back.

“We are closer and closer to the play-offs,” he said.

“Our burden is heavier after being beaten by Shaanxi. I told the coach that I would like to return for Beijing’s game, but of course, I have to consult team doctors. My injury is okay now.

“Plus, I’ve been training with the team for almost a month. I am in form now and I don’t want to see my team falling further and further away from the play-offs.”

“Give me the chance, and I will fight,” he pledged.

Wang did play, and both he and Bayi fought like lions against Beijing.

He had 15 points and eight rebounds before fouling out. The contribution helped the team win 87-80.

Heading into Friday’s game against TianJin, Bayi are in 10th with 22 wins and 21 defeats.

They trail eighth-place Shandong (24-19) and Beijing (23-20), who have fallen to ninth.

Guangdong and Xinjiang are on top of the standings at 38-5, followed by Jiangsu (33-10).
