Abu-Shamala (Shakopee, Minn.), averaged 4.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 16.0 minutes per game for his career as a Gopher. He played in 128 career games at the U, the second-most in team history, and ended his career tied for the fourth highest three-point field goal percentage in school history at .402 (106-264). Also, his 106 career three-point field goals are the 10th most in school history. Also, Abu-Shamala was honored by the University of Minnesota in February as its Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.



Albertson-Junkans (Stillwater, Minn.) closed out her Golden Gopher running career as a member of four Big Ten championship teams. A two-time cross country All-American, Albertson-Junkans led the Gopher cross country team to its very firt Big Ten title in 2007. She was also a member of Big Ten track champion teams in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Albertson-Junkans was a three-time Gopher cross country MVP and a Second Team Academic All-American. She holds the Minnesota cross country record over a 6-kilometer course and ranks among the top-10 in Gopher track history in five different events. Albertson-Junkans will graduate in August with a degree in child psychology.



The individuals were chosen from a group of 276 student-athletes honored by the conference throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university’s list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected.



All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.



The 22 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners include 14 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 11 All-Big Ten selections from the 2008-09 season. Also, Albertson-Junkans was one of five Big Ten student-athletes on the list to have been named an All-American during their collegiate career.
