The Los Angeles Lakers were dealt with another blow after Rajon Rondo went out with a thumb injury, which will keep him out of action for six to eight weeks. The 34-year-old veteran was a backup point guard to Avery Bradley, who decided to opt out of season resumption.

Rondo’s injury leaves Los Angeles thin at point guard. He averaged 7.1 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists per game this season. Former second overall draft pick and current analyst Jay Williams thinks that losing Rondo will hurt the Lakers, but Alex Caruso could step up.

“After LeBron James he is the best playmaker there is on the floor,” Williams said about Rondo on ESPN’s Get Up. “So I think that definitely hurts them. Rajon Rondo his basketball IQ is off the charts. You’ve heard Doc Rivers talk about it, you’ve heard multiple coaches and GMs just really acknowledge the fact that he is a genius on the court. I think this is a huge loss for the Lakers, a team that was considered to be a presumptive favorite.”

“But I do say this — do not sleep on Alex Caruso. He does not have the same playmaking abilities passing wise that Rajon Rondo does but I still think that he is somebody that is constantly overlooked within the NBA circles. His ability to play hard, to sustain that type of effort, Greeny, and he makes those momentum-like energetic plays for the Lakers. You have him and Quinn Cook who have won multiple championships with the Golden State Warriors. that can shoot the cover off the basketball.”

“They are considerable replacements that can add up. But I still think that losing Rajon Rondo is a massive loss. And I don’t know if that keeps the Lakers as regards to the favorites to win the whole thing.”

This season Caruso averaged 5.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 17.8 minutes per game.
