Hakeem Olajuwon led the Rockets to their first championship on this date in 1994

Hakeem Olajuwon led the Rockets to a 90-84 home victory in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks led the series 3-2 but the Rockets won back to back games at home.

Olajuwon finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in Game 7. He played 46 minutes. Vernon Maxwell also had a big game, and finished with 21 points.

Patrick Ewing had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks. Derek Harper finished with 23.

New York was doomed by horrible shooting, especially from beyond the arc. As a team they went 4-20 on 3-pointers and John Starks missed all 11 of his attempts. He finished with eight points on 2-18 shooting. Olajuwon blocked his potential title-winning three at the buzzer in Game 6 and he never bounced back.

Olajuwon was named Finals MVP. He led the NBA in points per game in the postseason. He averaged 28.9 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks per game in 23 postseason games.

The following season he led Houston to their consecutive title and was once again named Finals MVP and he once again led the NBA in points per game in the postseason. He averaged 33 points per game in 22 playoff games in 1995.
