The Spurs got revenge on the Heat and clinched their fifth title on this date in 2014

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Miami Heat 104-87 at home in Game 5 to win their fifth championship.

One year earlier, the Spurs lost a heartbreaking Finals series in seven games to the Heat.

San Antonio dominated Miami in the 2014 NBA Finals. They lost Game 2, 98-96, but all four of their victories were by 15 points or more. San Antonio’s “Big 3” proved they had one more incredible run left in them and Kawhi Leonard showed he was developing into a star.

In Game 5, Leonard had 22 points, Manu Ginobili had 19 points, Tony Parker and 16 points and Tim Duncan had 14 points. The Spurs also had much more depth than the Heat and that made a huge difference in 2014.

San Antonio only faced elimination once during their title run and that was in Game 7 of their first round series against the Dallas Mavericks. They won 119-96 at home. Parker had 32 points and Ginobili added 20 off the bench. The Spurs led 68-46 at the half and never looked back.

San Antonio then defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in five games, earning a trip to the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They won the series in six games.

Head coach Gregg Popovich’s deep bench and unselfish style of play helped prevent the veteran stars on the Spurs from getting warn down.

Leonard was named Finals MVP.

It was the fourth and final championship for Ginobili and Parker. It was the fifth and final one for Duncan.
