Magic Johnson’s clutch hook shot lifted the Lakers past the Celtics in game 4 of the Finals on this date in 1987

Magic Johnson’s go-ahead hook shot with two seconds remaining lifted the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-106 road win against the Boston Celtics. The victory gave the Lakers a commanding 3-1 series lead.

The Celtics were ahead for the majority of the game but Johnson helped the Lakers comeback in the fourth quarter. They trailed 106-105 when he hit the go-ahead shot over Kevin McHale. Boston had one last chance but Larry Bird missed a contested shot at the buzzer.

Johnson finished with 29 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead Los Angeles. James Worthy had 21 points.

McHale led the way for Boston, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Larry Bird finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. He played 47 minutes.

The Celtics went on to win Game 5 and extend the series. The Lakers then clinched the title at home in Game 6. Johnson was named Finals MVP.
