Larry Bird’s triple double clinched the NBA Finals for the Celtics on this date in 1986

Larry Bird’s great performance led the Boston Celtics to a 114-97 home victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. The victory clinched the series.

Bird and McHale were both excellent early and helped Boston jump out to a 55-38 lead at the half. The Rockets were never able to make it close and the Celtics cruised to the victory.

Bird finished with 29 points, 12 assists, 11 rebounds and three steals. He played 46 minutes in the game. No one on Houston was able to contain him. McHale finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Hakeem Olajuwon played well and finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals but he didn’t get much help. Ralph Sampson struggled, finishing with eight points on 4-12 shooting.

It would be the final title of his career and the last one for Boston until 2008.
