Boston Celtics legend and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell has lashed out at Donald Trump following a tweet from the U.S President pertaining to the ongoing protests over police brutality and racial discrimination in the wake of George Floyd’s killing.

Russell took to social media on Sunday morning, labeling Trump “divisive & a coward” in a tweet, adding the practice of “taking a knee” has never been about disrespecting the American flag.

Bill Russell Isn’t Very Optimistic

Russell, who has also praised protesters for coming out in numbers in spite of the challenges posed by the current pandemic, made a short statement on the protests earlier this month. The 11-time NBA champion claimed that whatever change brought about by Floyd’s killing won’t be enough.

Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, has been charged for both second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The three other officers seen in the now-viral bystander’s video of the incident have also been arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
