Cibona Zagreb to opt out of next season’s Euroleague?

Adriatic League champions Cibona Zagreb will be withdrawing their name from next season’s Euroleague, according to the mayor of the Croatian capital, Milan Bandić.

It follows a troubled season despite domestic success for Cibona, who might be opting out of the Euroleague due to financial troubles.

“According to the words of Zagreb mayor Milan Bandić, #Cibona is close to not use the option of participating in #Euroleague next season,” tweeted Yugobasket earlier today.

The same Twitter user added: “Bandić stated that #Euroleague means nothing else than an unnecessary cost for Cibona, which is in tough financial situation…”

Cibona will be losing key players next season, with DJ Strawberry already leaving the club due to missed payments and star forward Dario Saric looking for a move to the NBA, the Croatian giants will no doubt struggle to fill the void left by those two players.

A decision will be made by the Euroleague in the coming weeks.
