Red Star crowned 2014 NIJT champions

Red Star Belgrade captured the 2014 Nike International Junior Tournament title in Milan after beating Real Madrid 55-42 on Sunday afternoon.

In what was the perfect warm-up before the final two games of the Euroleague season, the Serbian side put their worrying situation back home behind them as Aleksandar Aranitovic led the way with 15 points, while Vojislav Stojanovic tallied 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in a fairly convincing win.

Stojanovic was also named he NIJT MVP as he averaged 13.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals in what was an undefeated stay in the fashion capital for Red Star.

It was a reasonably close first half that Red Star led 28-24, but Real Madrid couldn’t find a way through Belgrade’s stern defence and a 9-0 run that started the fourth quarter ended all hope of a comeback from the Spanish side who were outclassed by a strong Serbian outfit.

Wally Niang led Madrid with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
