Lokomotiv looking to move to Sochi, targets Euroleague A License

Euroleague debutants Lokomotiv Kuban are willing to make a move to stay among Europe’s elite teams for good. The club which has already played in three different cities is planning another move to continue its progress.

Andrey Vedishchev, President of Lokomotiv Kuban, revealed that his club is seriously thinking about moving to Sochi, the host city 2014 Winter Olympics. Lokomotiv would be using Bolshoy Ice Dome, a 13,000-seater arena which was opened in 2012 and has hosted a number of Olympic events including prestigious ice hockey tournament.

The club’s current home venue can only take 7,500 spectators and that is not enough to Euroleague A License, a goal that Lokomotiv is after.

Vedishchev also revealed that potential move was discussed with the Euroleague. The league intends to give A License to a team which will be playing in Sochi.

The final word belongs to the club’s main sponsor Russian Railways. It was their decision to move the club from Rostov to Krasnodar in 2009 and another move is likely to take place this summer.
