Domantas Sabonis chooses Gonzaga University

One of the most promising European talents Domantas Sabonis is set to take a less popular road by moving to NCAA from Euroleague. This year the 17-year-old forward made his debut with the first team of Unicaja Malaga including 19 appearances in Euroleague.

It was strongly rumoured that the youngest son of NBA Hall of Famer Arvydas Sabonis will leave Europe after gaining top level basketball experience. Despite playing for a professional team, Sabonis didn’t sign a professional contract to keep himself available for NCAA teams.

His next destination is most likely to be Gonzaga University, Arvydas Sabonis confirmed to the media. Domantas Sabonis has drawn the attention of several colleges but his preference was Washington-based Gonzaga.

Getting more playing time and developing individual skills were the main reasons that made Sabonis decide to go overseas. European teams have their season goals and are not spending that much time in developing young players as opposed to NCAA.

Domantas Sabonis averaged 2.7 points and 2 rebounds in Euroleague this season. Jonas Kazlauskas, head coach of Lithuanian national team mentioned young Sabonis as a prospect that he would be interested to see closer hinting of a possible call up to the reserve squad which will be assembled this year.
