Greek Basket League round up (week 12)

Olympiacos moved to the top of the Greek league with a 69-64 win at home to Nea Kifsia, who had won three straight before their trip to the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

The Euroleague holders had to come from behind to get the win though as they started poorly from the field, allowing the visitors to take a 19-15 lead after the first quarter. Business was restored mid-way through the second quarter though and the Reds were able to close it out for the win.

Kostas Slokas led Olympiacos with 15 points. Tony Crocker had 15 for Nea Kifsia.

Panathinaikos stay second after a convincing 83-62 away win over Rethymno Aegean. The league’s top two sides now both have 11-1 records to start the New Year.

The Greens were never really troubled as they buildt a steady lead as each quarter progressed. James Gist led the winners, off the becnh with 16 points as four Panathinaikos players scored in double-digits.

Justin Hurtt led all scorers for Rethymno with 19 points.

Panionios won 89-81 at Apollon Patras to solidify their place in third. Kevin Langford led the Athens-based side with 22 points as the Eurocup side were rarely troubled away from home.

Trikalla needed a session of overtime to defeat Aris 82-76 with the hosts taking charge in the extra session after being pegged back by Aris in regulation.

Jeremy Granger led Trikalla with 21 points, while Patrick Ewing Jr added 20 as well.

Ioannis Athineou led Aris with 21 points.

In the other games over the weekend, PAOK thumped basement side Ilysiakos 84-49 with Mark Payne leading all scorers for PAOK with 22 points. Kolossos came from behind to beat Ikaros 70-64. A 20-7 fourth quarter proved to be a game-changer as Kolossos came away victorious.

Panelefsiniakos beat KAOD 73-67 at home as they go up to ninth in the table following that win.
