British Basketball League round up (week 9)

Newcastle Eagles are on top of the British Basketball League pile after an exhilarating 86-74 overtime win over the Worcester Wolves on Friday night.

The hosts tallied 20 points in that extra session to secure the win to give them their third straight victory of the season.

It was so nearly an agonising loss though as Eagles trailed late in the final period of regulation. Down 60-53 with three minutes left, they needed a boost, and they got it from Charles Smith and Paul Gause, as they helped Newcastle to force the extra period and from there, the win.

Malik Cooke led the Eagles with 29 points. Alex Owumi had 16 to lead the Wolves.

Glasgow Rocks enjoyed a much-needed winning weekend as they eventually dispatched the Birmingham Knights and then the next day beat the Cheshire Phoenix.

Beating the winless Knights was hard work though, a second half masterclass in the end gave them the win after trailing 21-17 after one and only leading 40-36 at the half. They managed to come away with an 88-60 win. EJ Harrison led the Rocks with 17.

The Rocks then beat Cheshire Phoenix 102-90 in the north-west to make it a successful weekend. EJ Harrison again led the Rocks with 25 points, including five three-pointers.

The Sheffield Sharks also made it two wins from two this past weekend as they advanced to the BBL Cup semi-finals by beating Durham Wildcats 70-58 in Yorkshire.

Jeremie Simmons led all scorers with 19 points for the Sharks as they remain unbeaten at home this season in all competitions.

Sheffield then followed that up with a 91-79 overtime win in Manchester against the Giants as they held them scoreless in that extra period.

Patrick Horstmann led the Sharks with 18 points, including five in the overtime session.

David Aliu’s game-high 28 was not enough for the Manchester Giants side.

Despite defeat, Durham Wildcats continued to maintain their best start to a BBL season with a 72-67 win at home to the Plymouth Raiders.

RJ Evans led the Wildcats with 14 points as they now improve to 5-5 in the league this season.

London Lions had no trouble beating Surrey United at the CopperBox 101-67.

Nick Freer had 24 points to lead the Lions as they eventually broke clear of the Surrey side in the second quarter to jump to joint top of the BBL table.
