Top recruits are considering the G League over college basketball after the league says it’s willing to pay more for the right prospects.
The G League has yet to sign a prospect out of high school, but the option is “becoming more intriguing and potentially more lucrative to high school prospects” instead of going to college or playing overseas, sources told 247Sports.
In 2018, it was reported that the G League developed a program for prospects who are 18 years old and who opted out of college.
The salary for those potential players was $125,000.
The G League is now reportedly “willing to pay more for the right prospects.”
Players like LaMelo Ball and RJ Hampton opted to skip college and play professionally overseas.
There are several other players who are considering the professional path.
Class of 2020 five-star and 247Sports’ No. 13 overall player Isaiah Todd announced that he is forgoing college basketball after committing to the University of Michigan.
The G League is reportedly expected to be a serious potential landing spot.
Class of 2020 five-star and 247Sports’ No. 3 overall player Jalen Green is also expected to land in the G League.
It’s become increasingly clear that the G League is a focus and a priority for the NBA and their executives.
Going to college is becoming less important to the “elite” prospects, as they have their minds set on what they want to do; take the path that gets them to the money and the pros quicker.
