Bilbao put domestic problems aside, Eurocup round up

Bilbao put their domestic problems aside by beating Spirou Charleroi 88-71 in Spain to go 3-0 in Group B of the Eurocup.

The Belgian side remain winless in the competition following this comprehensive loss.

Belgian international Axel Herville led six Bilbao players in double-digits with 17 points as the Liga Endesa side raced away in the third quarter to record the win.

“It’s easy to say this was a tale of two halves,” said Bilbao coach Rafael Pueyo Mena. “Because the point differences were great in one but not the other. But I think that in games you have to get better. In the first 20 minutes, our opponents played well, came prepared and made it difficult on us with defensive changes.”

Devin Green led Charleroi with 20 points.

Also in Group B, Dimamo Sasari grabbed their second win in the group by thumping Elan Chalon 102-87.

A 17-2 run led the Italians to victory in what was an otherwise close game.

Drake Diener led the winners with 23 points.

In Group D, Virtus Rome handed Alba Berlin its first Eurocup loss 85-71 in the Italian capital.

Quinton Hosley led Rome with 20 points, while Cliff Hammonds and Vojdan Stojanovski score 12 points each for the German side. Both sides are now at 1-2.

French side Gravelines were comfortable against Mons 75-52 as they improve to 3-0 in Group B.

Juby Johnson hit five three-pointers, en route to 19 points for the winners.

In Group C, Ratiopharm Ulm were 78-68 victors over Paris-Levallois, who are yet to get their first win so far.

After leading 24-16 after the first quarter, the hosts were outplayed in the second, falling behind 43-33 and from there, they didn’t recover.

Philipp Schwethelm led Ulm with 12 points, all from three-point land. Jawad Williams led Paris with a game-high 22.

Elsewhere Khimik Yuzhme were 88-75 winners in Hungary over Alba Fehervar in Group F.

The Ukraine side now move to 3-0 while Alba remain without a win.

Unics Kazan were comfortable 81-72 victors in Estonia over Kalev Tallinn.

A 31-12 first quarter realistically settled matters as the Russian side moves to 3-0 in Group G.
