Zouros sacked by Zalgiris, again

Zalgiris Kaunas has decided to switch gears by letting go head coach Ilias Zouros, the club announced.

Zouros, a one-time Eurocup Coach of the Year, led Zalgiris to a 0-2 record in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Zalgiris was 2-1 in the Lithuanian League. The decision was taken fast on the heels of a Lithuanian League home loss against Siauliai.

Zalgiris has decided to promote Saulius Stombergas to the head coach spot.

Zouros, age 47 and a former Eurocup Coach of the Year, has been previously released by Zalgiris in October 2011. He had previously coached Olympiacos, Peristeri, Aris and Panellinios in Greece, Sagesse Beirut in the Lebanon and Paris Racing Basket of France.

Stombergas, age 39, helped Zalgiris to win the Euroleague in 1999 and the Saporta Cup in 1998 as the team’s star forward. He will make his head coaching debut with Zalgiris.

“Saulius Stombergas is a young, promising coach,” Zalgiris director Paulius Motiejunas said. “I have no doubt that he will change our situation in a positive way.
