Brose Baskets and Galatasaray get the season started, Euroleague round up

Brose Baskets began the 2013/14 Euroleague season with an 84-70 win over Strasbourg in Bamberg.

Trailing 21-16 after the first quarter, the Germans took full control of the game, winning it 27-8 as the French turned the ball over and conceded numerous buckets inside.

“I think we rode a really good second quarter where we gained some confidence,” said Bamberg coach Chris Fleming.

“We thought our bench would be important for us. And [Jamar] Smith was outstanding. He hit every big shot. [John] Goldsberry gave us great stability at the point. I think we could have played a little bit better in the fourth, but in general, we’re really, really happy to get the first win.”

Jamar Smith led the winners with 19 points, while Alexis Ajinca had 19 in defeat for Strasbourg.

Strasbourg coach Vincent Collet, fresh from a gold medal triumph with France at Eurobasket begins his Euroleague season with a loss.

“I think we started the game very well, the way we wanted to do it,” he said. “We had a good rhythm on offence and a lot of good shots inside. The only regret from the beginning is that we didn’t find the outside shots.

“We were scoring, but only in the paint. The first 10 minutes were good for us. But unfortunately we had a terrible period after that until half-time. We lost control. We had good actions on offense, but we couldn’t score.”

Galatasaray got their Euroleague campaign off to a winning start with an 84-75 away win against Montepaschi Siena.

A tight first quarter was followed by a 31-point burst from the visitors as they raced ahead 51-33 at half-time and never looked back.

Puerto Rico international Carlos Arroyo had 21 points and four assists for the winners while Daniel Hackett had a game-high 26 points for Montepaschi.

“We started the game very well, perfectly as we had prepared,” Galatasaray coach Ergin Ataman said.

“We knew that Siena would attack our pick-and-roll, doubling on Arroyo and [Jamont] Gordon. We made good use of the space on the court and we found the right shots. We defended well in the first half against [Joshua] Carter and Hackett. Then we were able to defend against the aggressiveness of Siena, who tried to come back.”
