EuroBasket – 2nd round, day 2

Group F gets its first day of action at Eurobasket, as the second round continues at the Stozice Arena in Ljubljana.

Finland 63-88 Croatia

Croatia blitzed Finland in the second quarter, en route to an 88-63 win in the first game of the day in Ljubljana.

Finland’s cause was not helped by the fact that they were just 5/29 from the field at half-time, ending with a poor 20/60, good enough for 33 percent overall. Croatia went on a 19-1 run which ran from the first to second quarters to effectively seal the game.

Damjan Rudez recorded 17 points to lead Croatia, supported by 15 points from Bojan Bogdanovic.

Shawn Huff had 10 for Finland, the only player in double-figures as Petteri Koponen was held to just five points off 1/7 shooting.

Greece 79-75 Spain

Greece stayed alive in Group F with a 79-75 win over Spain in game two.

At the risk of dropping to 0-3 and near elimination, Greece had to win to improve its chances of a quarter-final place even at this early stage of the second round.

Thanks to a inspirational 20-point haul from Vassilis Spanoulis, the Greeks stayed in contention as a 27-18 fourth quarter got the job done.

Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol each had 20 for Spain.

Slovenia 84-77 Italy

Hosts Slovenia ended Italy’s unbeaten run at Eurobasket with an 84-77 win in the final game of the day at the Stozice Arena.

Once again, Goran Dragic led with 22 points as Slovenia overcame a late Italian run to pull clear in the final minute.

Alessadro Gentile led the Italians with 20 points as they fall to 2-1 in the group. Realistically, one win from the remaining two games should seal their place in the quarter-finals.
