EuroBasket – day 6

It’s the final day of group play at Eurobasket 2013 and there has been no short of exciting and surprising turnouts so far in Slovenia. And, there are still spots available for the second round at the Stozice Arena.

Group A

Great Britain 68-87 Ukraine

Ukraine booked their ticket into the second round with a convincing 87-68 win over Great Britain in Ljubljana.

It was win or go home for the Brits and once Ukraine led 15-8 in the third minute of play, they never trailed again.

Kyryl Natyazhko and Ihor Zaytsev each had 11 points to lead Ukraine as they finish 4-1 in Group A. GB were paced by Devon van Oostrum and Kieron Achara’s 12 points as they fall to 2-3.

Germany 80-76 Israel

Germany signed off from Eurobasket with an 80-76 win over Israel who themselves are eliminated thanks to this result.

Lucca Taiger and Per Gunther got 15 points each to lead Germany who finish 2-3. Omri Casspi’s 22 not enough for the Israelis as they finish 1-4 and bottom of Group A

Belgium 65-82 France

France recovered from a poor start to beat Belgium in Group A’s final game in Ljubljana.

Finding themselves 46-34 down at half-time, the French roared back into life in the third, holding the Lions to just nine points, while scoring 32 of their own to record the win.

Tony Parker was rested for large parts top-scored with 20 points. Axel Herville had 13 for the Lions. Both teams advance.

Group B

Latvia 76-66 FYR of Macedonia

Latvia prevailed 76-66 over a disappointing FYR of Macedonia side as the Latvians advance to the second round of Eurobasket, eliminating the Macedonians in the process.

A 27-16 first quarter was enough for Latvia, despite a late fight back from the Macedonians, who fall to 1-4 and follow up a heroic 2011 campaign with the failure to advance past the second round.

Kristaps Janicenoks and Kaspars Berzins each had 15 points to lead Latvia, who finish 3-2. Pero Antic responded with 16 points for FYR of Macedonia.

Lithuania 72-78 Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Lithuania 78-72 but failed to advance by not beating them by 10 points or more.

It was a task that they looked to complete though, ahead by 14 points thanks to a big three from Mirza Teletovic, who had a game-high 31 points.

Linas Kleiza’s double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds didn’t do enough on the night, but overall, got them over the line.

Montenegro 83-76 Serbia

Montenegro won the battle 83-76 against Serbia, but ultimately lost the war against their fierce neighbouring rivals as Serbia advance anyway with a 3-2 record.

Montenegro, paced by Tyrese Rice’s 12 points were knocked out before the game began. Rasko Katic had 19 for the Serbs.

Group C

Georgia 59-83 Spain

Spain eased their way into the second round with an easy 83-59 success over Georgia.

Ricky Rubio led the way with 16 points for the Spanish as they turned a close first quarter, which was all tied up 17-17 into a 62-39 advantage after three periods of play.

From there, they never looked back.

Georgia bow out of Eurobasket, but have certainly impressed many fans in Celje. Giorgi Shermadini led them with 10 points.

Croatia 70-53 Czech Republic

A 23-11 fourth quarter ensured Croatia’s progression to the second round as they beat the Czech Republic 70-53, eliminating them in the process.

Ante Tomic had 12 points to lead the Croats, while Pavel Pumprla answered with a game-high 19 points for the Czechs.

Slovenia 61-71 Poland

Poland signed off from Eurobasket by beating the hosts Slovenia 71-61 in a game that was academic whatever the outcome.

Slovenia will head to Ljubljana with a 1-1 record and the knowledge that they have to improve in various aspects of their game in order to go any further in the tournament.

Thomas Kelati led Poland with 21 points. Domen Lorbek had 13 to lead the hosts.

Group D

Greece 77-86 Finland

Finland will march on to Ljubljana thanks to a stunning 86-77 win over Greece.

With the group already sorted, it was all about group placing, and Finland will arrive in Slovenia’s capital city with a 1-1 record.

Petteri Koponen had a game-high 29 points for the Finns while Nikos Zisis replied for the Greeks, who themselves are also through but finish with a 3-2 record.

Italy 82-79 Sweden

Italy will arrive in Ljubljana with Eurobasket’s only perfect record as they edged Sweden 82-79.

Alessandro Gentile led the Italians with 19 points and Pietro Aradori added 16 to lead the Italians, who sat out Marco Bellinelli in preparation for the second round.

Jeffery Taylor led Sweden with 28 points as they head home.

Turkey 77-89 Russia

Russia ended their Eurobasket with an 89-77 success over Turkey in a game purely for pride as both sides were eliminated.

Sergey Karasev had 25 points to cancel Oguz Savas’ 18 for Turkey.
