Great Britain coach Joe Prunty has taken a surprise gamble on injured forward Dan Clark and released Liam Potter ahead of Eurobasket, which tips off on Wednesday.
Clark has not featured in any of Britain’s warm-up games where they have only won one out of seven games played, the last defeat was a 100-46 mauling at the hands of European champions Spain.
What makes Clark’s addition surprising is that he recently failed a medical with his new club Zaragoza with the team doctors suggesting that the London-born player take two months off to rest the ankle injury that he suffered during the London Olympics last year.
Clark though is determined to prove the Zaragoza team doctors wrong by travelling to Slovenia where they will face Israel, France, Germany, Belgium and Ukraine in the capital Ljubljana. It now means that Prunty has no room for 7-foot, Grimsby-born newcomer Liam Potter.
“Liam made great strides over the course of our training,” said Prunty. “We appreciate his efforts and wish him the best with his team this season.
“I am very pleased with the final 12 players we have representing GB at Eurobasket 2013. Although we have faced some tough games in our preparation, we have played some of the best teams in the world which has tested our players and prepared them well for the challenges ahead in Eurobasket.”
Great Britain trained for the final time on Saturday before flying to Ljubljana from Madrid earlier today.
The updated Great Britain team for Eurobasket is now Andrew Sullivan, Ogo Adegboye, Kieron Achara, Eric Boateng, Ali Fraser, Andrew Lawrence, Myles Hesson, Kyle Johnson, Gareth Murray, Dan Clark, Justin Robinson, Devon van Oostrum.
