Road to EuroBasket 2015 begins: round-up of the 1st qualification round, round 6

Bulgaria, Estonia, Switzerland and Belarus will contest the semi-finals after all four teams won their respective groups in the battle to become the first team through to Eurobasket 2015 in Ukraine.

Group A

Iceland 77-71 Romania

With Bulgaria’s place from Group A already confirmed, Iceland’s 77-71 win over Romania was purely for pride.

The result leaves Romania bottom of the group with a 1-3 record.

Jakob Sigurdarson led the winners with 23 points, while Adrian Gutoaia had 19 for the visiting Romanians.

Group B

Netherlands 71-53 Portugal

The Netherlands comfortably defeated Portugal 71-53 in Leiden but it was academic as Estonia qualified as group winners.

A 16-0 run in the first quarter turned a 13-7 deficit into a 23-13 advantage for the Dutch and they never looked back.

Worthy De Jong had 17 points for the Netherlands while Joao Gomes replied with 10 for Portugal.

Group C

Austria 97-96 Switzerland (AOT)

Despite losing to Austria 97-96 in overtime, Switzerland qualified out of Group C thanks to a better head-to-head record over their Austrian counterparts.

Both teams finished with 5-1 records but Switzerland’s 69-63 win in their earlier meeting gave them the head-to-head win overall.

Thomas Schreiner led the unlucky Austrians with 22 points. Dusan Mladjan led all scorers with 31 in vain for the Swiss who lost the battle but won the war.

“Congratulations to my players for a great performance today,” said Switzerland coach Petar Aleksic. “I said after our home game that we will come to Austria to qualify for the semi-finals. It was a tough game which we managed to control for 40 minutes. Although Austria took a close win in the end, I think that we really deserve to be in the semi-finals.”

Denmark 87-58 Luxembourg

Denmark comfortably beat winless Luxembourg 87-58 in a dead-rubber contest in Horsens.

Nicolai Iversen led the Danes with 17 points while Samy Picard fronted the visitors with 15.

Group D

Belarus 114-73 Slovak Republic

Belarus thrashed the Slovak Republic 114-73 in the capital Minsk to qualify as winners of Group D.

Aliaksei Trastsinetski led the Belarussians with 21 points as they put 65 points past the helpless Slovaks in the first half and never looked back.

“I completely rely on the coach and if he trusted me to play that much today there is no other way for me but to go ahead and do it,” Trastsinetski said afterwards.

Martin Bilik had 17 for the Slovak Republic.
