EA7 Milano forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu has pulled out of the Great Britain squad ahead of next month’s Eurobasket.
Mensah-Bonsu had been given special dispensation to arrive late to GB’s training camp after a promotional tour in Ghana, but the Londoner has made a U-turn, after announcing his decision on Twitter.
He tweeted: “Hurts my heart that I am not playing but I have my reasons! Trust me.”
Great Britain have already lost NBA players Luol Deng and Joel Freeland to injury and preparation for the new NBA season respectively – and with the news that Mensah-Bonsu has joined them too – it leaves new coach Joe Prunty with a tough task of preparing his players for Eurobasket in Slovenia, without his main scorers.
Devon van Oostrum, recently named MVP of the European Championships, Division B and Dan Clark, who recently signed for Liga Endesa side Zaragoza are expected to play at Eurobasket.
Great Britain are in Group A in the capital Ljubljana where they face off against France, Germany, Israel, Ukraine and Belgium.
