Pocius signing a welcome distraction from Romanov scandal in Kaunas

The signing of Martynas Pocius from Real Madrid has certainly been a welcome distraction for everyone involved at Zalgiris after news broke that an international search is ongoing for disgraced former owner Vladimir Romanov.

Lithuanian international Pocius has penned a one year deal plus the option for another season in Kaunas following a torrid spell with Real Madrid where he was plagued with injuries throughout the last campaign, only playing in 12 Euroleague games for the Liga Endesa side, en route to the title loss to Olympiacos.

Pocius won the 2013 Liga Endesa title and 2012 Copa Del Rey during his time with Madrid. He averaged 7 points in his first season away from his homeland.

The 27-year-old though will look to start a new chapter in his career in Lithuania, where he won the LKL league and cup double in 2011 plus a pair of Baltic League trophies.

Pocius also won the bronze medal for the Lithuanian national side at the world championships in 2010.

Fans in Kaunas will no doubt be happy to see one of their favourite sons back on the roster and is will be a welcome bit of news with the story coming out of Lithuania that and international search has been launched for former Zalgiris owner Vladimir Romanov.

Romanov, currently in Russia undergoing treatment for an illness is wanted for questioning in the Ūkio Bankas’ bankruptcy case over alleged embezzlement of 50million Lithuanian litas (€14.46 million).

He left Zalgiris in late-February under a cloud with the club announcing that the situation leading to his departure was complicated. Romanov left the Kaunas club with a reported €7.2million being owed to players dating back to the season before last.

Russian-born businessman Romanov was also the former owner of Scottish football side Hearts, who are currently in administration and have joined the authorities in helping them catch Romanov for his conduct as club owner, and not punish the football club itself.
