Vassilis Kavvadas will replace Big Sofo for the upcoming Eurobasket

Vassilis Kavvadas will replace Sofoklis Schortsianitis for the upcoming Eurobasket, since Big Sofo didn’t pass the medical examination.

In a surprising turn of events, Sofoklis Schortsianitis was banned from the Greek National Team for Eurobasket  in Slovenia because he was not ready to join the training camp which will occur the next days. His place has been given to Vassilis Kavvadas, the 22-year-old center who plays for Panionios.

The Greek Basketball Federation, however, said that Big Sofo’s situation will be re-examined but the possibilities of his return are minimal.

Kavvadas was invited to train with the Greek squad last year, and he was part of the U-18 team. He is playing for Panionios for three seasons, and he was about to move to Panathinaikos or Olympiakos last season but finally he stayed in Nea Smyrni.

This choice is quite risky since Kavvadas didn’t play as well as expected this season, but right now seems to be the best choice available, due to the facts that he is young, very talented and “hungry” for big time experiences and competitions like Eurobasket.
