Women’s basketball send farewell wishes to Russian greats

Two legends of women’s basketball, not just in Russia, but in the world; Ilona Korstin and Svetlana Abrosimova have decided to call it quits all together.

Both players announced their respective decisions within 24 hours of each other after ending on a high by winning the Eurocup Women with Dynamo Moscow. For Korstin, it was a much-needed relief after she went out in the opening stages of Eurobasket Women with the Russian national side. Abrosimova had already called time on her international career.

It brings another chapter of Russian women’s basketball to a close as a new generation are coming in with what promises to be a couple of years of rebuilding.

Korstin announced her retirement via her column on sports.ru.

She said: “The 33-year-old said, “I have been playing basketball since the age of ten and I think now is the time to stop.

“My career has been full of victories and colourful moments.

“I was lucky enough to play on the best teams in Russia, France and Spain.”

She added, “I think that the winning shot in the final of Eurocup Women with Dynamo Moscow was the pinnacle.”

Abrosimova enjoyed a glittering career, which saw her win an NCAA title with UConn back in 2000, then ten years later, she won the WNBA crown with the Seattle Storm.

She has revealed that, post-retirement, she will put her name forward for the vacant Presdency of the Russian Basketball Federation.

She told rsport.ru “I think that if I really want to move to administrative work, then I have to end my playing career.

“I will work in that direction regardless of whether I win the Russian Basketball Federation elections.

“It’s always better to go out on top and I know that I will not regret this decision.”

The result of the elections will be determined next month.
