Panathinaikos adds quality with Mavrokefalides

In an extremely surprising move, Panathinaikos has signed Greek international power forward/center Loukas Mavrokefalides.

The player had been in negotiations with Olympiacos for the past few weeks and although there seemed to be an initial agreement (for a two years deal, worth a total of 1 million euros), Fenerbahce agreement with Obradovic stalled the move, as it was rumoured that the Serbian coach would have wanted him with him in Istanbul.

Olympiacos initially increased their offer to €1.3million for two years. However in the meantime they had signed Bryant Dunston and unofficially withdrew their interest for Mavrokefalides.

Having less choices, Mavrokefalides accepted Panathinaikos’ offer when, according to “Prasini” newspaper, he received a phone call from the Greens’ president and proceeded to sign a contract, late last night.

Mavrokefalides will cover the absense of Tsartsaris, who was a versatile big man, covering mainly the power forward position, but sometimes playng as center too in smaller lineups.

The Greek champions are now rumoured to be looking for an American center and a backup guard, in order to complete their roster.
