EuroBasket Women – Quarter-Finals

Spain marched to the semi-finals of Eurobasket Women while Serbia continued their unexpected run by also reaching the last four.

Serbia continues Eurobasket surge; beat Italy

After losing their opening game of the tournament, Serbia have bounced back to knock a brave Italy side out, beating them 85-79.

Jelana Milovanovic led the Serbs with 21 points and 7 rebounds as they fought back in the second half, trailing 42-38, the Serbians clawed their way back, but still trailed going into the final quarter, down 65-64.

When it came down to the last minute, Serbia held their nerve, as Italy missed chances to win it, including free throws from Kathrin Ress that she missed.

“Winning five games in a row at a major tournament tells you everything you need to know about this team,” Serbia’s Ana Dabovic said.

“Italy played a really tough game, but we always believed we would do it, even when things were difficult for us.”

Giorgia Sottana led all scorers in vain for the Italians with 22 points.

Spain roll on as they defeat Czech Republic

Spain continued to put the horror show of 2011 behind them as they beat the Czech Republic 75-58 in the second quarter-final.

Alba Torrens was unstoppable for the Spaniards, as she scored 29 points, with 20 of them in just 14 minutes. Sancho Lyttle was also in fine form with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals.

Despite the Czechs refusal to give up the fight, the Spanish had too much for them in all departments, forcing the Czech Republic into committing 19 turnovers.

Katrina Elhotova led the Czechs in defeat with 13.
