EuroBasket Women – day 9 (2nd Round, Group E)

Eurobasket Women’s second phase came to a close in Lille as Group E concluded with three games, the quarter-final line-up was also confirmed at the conclusion of the round’s games.

Montenegro 60-66 Italy

Italy have exceeded all expectations by defeating Montenegro 66-60 in the day’s first game.

Raffaella Masciadri led Italy with 15 points as the Azzuriettes turned a 45-34 half-time deficit into a 56-54 lead by the end of the third period. Thereafter, they shut out the Montenegrins with intense defensive pressure.

Jelena Dubljevic’s double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds was not enough for Montenegro.

Sweden 75-72 Slovak Republic

Sweden’s 75-72 win over the Slovak Republic eliminated Montenegro and the Slovaks and in the process, qualifying them to the last eight.

The Swedes were made to work for their win, as what seemed to be a comfortable 46-36 lead was turned around until the last quarter when the brave Slovakians made their move. Unfortunately, it was too late.

Frida Eldebrink and Elisabeth Egnell each had 17 points for Sweden while Lucia Kupcikova’s 15 points was not enough.

Spain 61-48 Turkey

Spain defeated Turkey 61-48 in the group’s final game as Turkey tasted defeat for the first time at Eurobasket, while the Spaniards’ undefeated streak continues.

Sancho Lyttle was again impressive as her 18 points and 13 rebounds seled the deal for Spain. Isil Arben led four Turks with 8 points. Both teams had already advanced from this group beforehand.
