EuroBasket Women – day 5 (2nd Round, Group E)

The second round continues at Eurobasket Women as the focus switches to Lille, home of Group E.

Slovak Republic 44-80 Spain

Spain showed no signs of slowing down in the groups’ first game as they thrashed the Slovak Republic 80-44.

The Spaniards took control from the first quarter onwards and never showed any signs of slowing down. They led 44-22 at the half and there was no way back from there, Spain forced 20 turnovers out of their opponents while only turning it over 8 times themselves.

Sancho Lyttle continued her good form in France by leading Spain with 18 points and 5 steals. Klaudia Lukacovicova had 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Slovakians.

Sweden 69-58 Montenegro

Sweden continued their great run at Eurobasket with a 69-58 success over a strong Montenegro side.

Frida Elbebrink led Sweden with 21 points but it was the clutch play of Ashley Key that provided the game’s turning point as her 8 points in a little over two minutes during the early stages of the fourth gave her side a 58-48 advantage, which the Montenegrins could not come back from.

Jelena Dubljevic led Montenegro with 17 points.

Italy 46-66 Turkey

Turkey’s full defensive arsenal was on full display as they hammered Italy 66-46 in the day’s final game.

In what was a reasonably close first half, Turkey turned a 34-29 half-time lead to a 51-31 lead after the third period to end all hope of an Italian victory.

Yasemin Dalgalar led Turkey with 10 points, the only player in double figures for the winners. Giorgia Sottana grabbed 11 points for the Italians.
