France name squad while Spain trim theirs

France coach Pierre Vincent has named his final roster for Eurobasket Women in just under two weeks following a 64-50 friendly win over Russia.

There was joy for 19-year-old Valeriane Ayayi, who will make her international debut for the Olympic silver-medalists as they look to go one better as the host nation at Eurobasket.

France roster: Marielle Amant (Nantes Reze), Valeriane Ayayi (Basket Landes), Celine Dumerc (Bourges), Emilie Gomis (BLMA), Sandrine Gruda (UMMC Ekaterinburg), Anael Lardy (ZVVZ USK Prague), Edwige Lawson-Wade (BLMA), Endene Miyem (Bourges), Emmeline Ndongue (Bourges), Gaelle Skrela (BLMA), Diandra Tchatchouang (Perpignan), Isabelle Yacoubou (Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje).

Meanwhile, Spain have trimmed their roster down to 14 as coach Lucas Mondelo will finalise the squad with two more cuts before Eurobasket.

He has cut guard Anna Cruz from the lineup though.

“This is always a difficult decision and dare I even say painful, because all the players who are with us would deserve to be at Eurobasket Women,” Mondelo said.

“But unfortunately, only 12 can go to the championship and we had to take a decision.

“Anna Cruz has shown that with her quality, attitude and experience, she could be one of the chosen ones at this level, but the small details are those upon which we decide.

“We’ll have a team in France that plays at speed and with a rate at which Anna Cruz could not reach after being injured in the last game of Liga Femenina with Rivas.”
