Koufos: I need time to improve

Greece’s Kostas Koufos admits that he needs more time to improve during the off-season as the reasoning behind his decision not to play at Eurobasket this summer.

TalkBasket along with several Greek outlets reported that the Denver Nuggets center chose to skip the event in Slovenia so that he could improve his game during the summer months. It was confirmed late last night during an interview with Gazzeta.gr.

“I wanted to play and was looking forward to it but unfortunately things don’t always turn out the way we want,” Koufos told the Greek website.

“The rehabilitation process didn’t give me enough time to work out correctly and strengthen my feet and despite the good season I had this year, I could not take advantage of my ability to score far from the basket.

“I only moved inside the paint and still did not get the ball so much to play with my back to the basket.”

The big man though said that even though he has decided not to play this summer, he isn’t bidding farewell to the international stage just yet.

24-year-old Koufos was a starter for Denver, as they reached the Western Conference Playoffs. He averaged eight points and 6.9 rebounds per game throughout the season. They were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the first round.
