Coach K to guide USA to Rio 2016?

Two-time Olympic gold medal winning coach Mike Krzyzewski is currently in discussions to return as the United States Olympic men’s coach through the Rio 2016 Olympics, according to SI.com.

The veteran head coach of the Duke Blue Devils announced that he would not continue on with Team USA after the London Olympics last summer where he guided them to back-to-back gold medals.

However, in a surprising U-turn, Krzyzewski told SI.com that he and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo have been talking about his return “quite a bit.”

“I think it’s very close to being resolved,” Colangelo said in the SI.com report. “That’s all I can say for sure.

“Give it another week and it should be resolved.”

Krzyzewski told ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning that he expected a new coach to be named this summer.

The SI.com report also reveals that Colangelo has not approached any other candidates for the vacant position. Boston Celtics’ Doc Rivers, San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo were assumed to be interviewed.

Krzyzewski took over the reigns in 2005 and has steered the USA to a bronze medal at the world championships in 2006 as well as a gold in 2010. Since 2006, Team USA have not lost a competitive fixture.

And now Coach K could be back to lead the number one ranked side to next year’s Basketball World Cup in Madrid through to the 2016 Olympics.

“There’s a chance,” Krzyzewski told SI.com. “That’s correct.”
