Caja Laboral stay alive, Euroleague Top 16 round-up

Caja Laboral stayed in the hunt for a place in the Euroleague last eight following an 86-82 win at BC Khimki.

Andres Nocioni led all scorers with 24 points as the Spaniards sealed the win in the final minutes, thanks to a three-pointer from the Argentine and free throws from Fernando San Emeterio.

Paul Davis led Khimki with 15 points.

Both teams are now on 7-6 records following this result. Caja Laboral need to beat Montepaschi Siena next week by more than 11 points to have any chance of advancing while Khimki still hold the fourth and final spot in Group F and will need to beat Olympiacos in the final week by more than five points to have any chance of qualifying themselves.

Montepaschi dropped to 7-6 after they lost 77-69 at home to Barcelona.

The Italians started the game on fire, leading 21-6 but Barca came fighting back with a 17-2 run towards the end of the first and then a 11-4 run in the second to take a 29-24 lead and march on their way to victory.

Nathan Jawai led with 22 points and Joe Ingles added 20 for the victors.

Olympiacos got the job done away at Fenerbahce 78-73 as they improved to 8-5 heading into the final week of the Top 16.

Kostas Papanikolou led the reigning Euroleague champions with 16 points as the Reds stayed on course for a spot in the last eight.

“Tonight we won a very crucial game against a very tough team,” Olympiacos Georgios Bartzokas said.

“They were leading by 8 points in the middle of the last quarter, but we showed character on the court and managed to win. In the last weeks of the group matches every game is like a final. Our players had too much pressure on their shoulders and need motivation.”

Bo McCalebb, Omer Onan and Romain Sato all had 12 points for Fenerbahce.

Deon Thompson had 16 points for the Germans.
