Simone Pianigiani quits Fenerbahce

The big-spenders Fenerbahce Ulker will have to look for a new coach to lead the team after Simone Pianigiani announced his resignation due to personal reasons.

Despite bringing some of the top players in Europe last summer the Turkish side are struggling in Euroleague. The poor results caused the team morale to drop significantly.

Fenerbahce were thrashed 99-60 by Barcelona this week in front of their own fans. This devastating loss meant that the Istanbul outfit are now 2-6 in the Top 16 with only theoretical chances of qualification. They qualified from the regular season in the final week with a 5-5 record.

Pianigiani brought two players from his former team Montepaschi – Bo McCalebb and David Andersen along with two ex-Panathinaikos players Mike Batiste and Romain Sato.

The team was unable to fulfill its potential and the pressure was increasing on coach Pianigiani who was expected to bring his new team to contention for a place in this year’s Final Four in London.

“I am proud that I’ve been part of the family of Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul and I am very thankful to Fenerbahce Sports Club for their huge support and close interest for me,” said Pianigiani to the club’s website.

Assistant coach Ertugrul Erdogan will take Pianigiani’s seat. Fenerbahce will travel to Siena to face Montepaschi on Friday hoping to use the coaching change to mobilize the team.
