FIBA Europe statement regarding their concern of game in Lithuania

FIBA Europe have released a statement in the last hour regarding their concern over the current state of Lithuanian Basketball

“FIBA Europe has expressed its deep concern about the recent developments in Lithuania, with the reported arrest and detention of Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LBF) Secretary General Mindaugas Balciunas on suspicion of embezzlement of public funds.

In a letter to the LBF, FIBA Europe made it clear that it is especially concerned as, according to media reports, the case made by the prosecutors is related to FIBA Europe’s most successful event to-date, EuroBasket 2011.

It is clear that the image of basketball, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation as well as FIBA Europe is in danger of being damaged regardless of the outcome of the case.

FIBA Europe is especially concerned that the sport will be hit hard in Lithuania which is the definition of a basketball country.

FIBA Europe will keep monitoring events and is awaiting a report from the LBF.

As more details come through, FIBA Europe will be able to offer a more comprehensive reaction.”

So my friends, in short words, what this doc/letter is abour?

  • Martin

It´s about the arrest of the Secretary General of the Lithuanian federation for corruption linked to a hotel used during the Eurobasket 2011.

Not exactly – it is more about a lobying than corruption. In order to get EB 2011 to Panevezys city, one of the requirements was hotel capacity. Balciunas tried to expand this capacity – which was inadequate – by renovating one of the hotels using EU funding. When it became clear that this was not possible, he used Lithuanian Basketball Federation funding. That’s it. No real need to put a man to jail – for possibly not entirely correct procedure. He is not accused of corruption, neither personal gain

Thee pres is stating accusations of bribery and misuse of minicipality funds that were given for basketball projects, but instead used for the renovation of a private hotel. Therefore, unfairly benefitting a private hotel owner with tax payer’s money. This is criminal offense in any country…plus forgery to documents , etc….
