Maccabi improve to 3-0, Euroleague round-up

Maccabi Electra are now 3-0 in this season’s Euroleague following a crushing 90-61 win on the road over Elan Chalon.

David Logan led five Tel Aviv players in double-figures with 17 points as the Israeli champions virtually dominated from tip-to-buzzer en route to the victory as Elan Chalon, who had held their own in the first two games were brought crashing back down to earth by the veteran Euroleague side.

What made the victory that convincing was that leading scorer Ricky Hickman only managed two points with those points coming from the foul line.

“We were very focused today,” Maccabi coach David Blatt said afterwards. “We played with great intensity and it was also nice to watch us play tonight. We had great ambition to win another road game and we did that impressively.”

Brion Rush and Shelden Williams each got 12 points to lead Elan Chalon who fall to 1-2 in Group B.

Zalgiris also improve to 3-0 after they defeated holders Olympiacos 61-79 in Greece.

The Lithuanians came from behind though to grab the win, as they let Olympiacos go 39-33 ahead at half-time. From the third quarter onwards though, Zalgiris stormed through, restricting the Reds to just 10 points in the penultimate period, going 59-49 to the good as they headed to the fourth quarter.

From there, they won the quarter comfortably 20-12 to seal the deal and remain undefeated. Marko Popovic led Zalgiris with 16 points, including three triples.

Kyle Hines led the Reds with 15.

Lietuvos Rytas made it 2-0 on the night for the Lithuanian clubs as they edged Partizan 69-61 in Vilnius. Macedonian Predrag Samardziski and Renaldas Seibutis both hit 14 points to lead Lietuvos Rytas.

Asseco Prokom grabbed its first win of this Euroleague season following a 77-66 win over Alba Berlin in Gdynia.

In what was a closely contested match, the Polish side broke the game open with a 26-16 fourth quarter to come away with a confidence boosting victory.

Jerel Blessingame has 16 points for Asseco Prokom while Dashaun Wood led the German side with 18.

“We hit some very important shots in the crucial moments. We also played good defense and we were better on the boards,” Asseco Prokom coach Kestutis Kemzura said.

It was a bad night for the Turkish clubs as Fenerbahce went down in Istanbul 83-75 to Real Madrid thanks to 21 points from an outstanding Rudy Fernandez, helped as well by 15 points from Jaycee Carroll.

Fenerbahce had Bo McCalebb in the line-up but he looked slightly off pace, despite 12 points. Omer Onan led the Turks with 14.

Besiktas put in their best efforts on the road but ultimately lost 72-60 to Barcelona as they suffered their first defeat of the Euroleague while Barca moved to 3-0.

Australian Nathan Jawai led the Liga Endesa side with 14 points while Curtis Jerrells led Besiktas with 18 points.

Another team to move to 3-0 were CSKA Moscow as they beat Brose Baskets 76-67 in the Russian capital.

Sonny Weems once again led from the front as he poured in 17 points for CSKA. Bostjan Nachbar led all scorers in vain for the German side with 21 points.

Caja Laboral grabbed their first win of the Euroleague campaign by winning on the road against EA7 Milano 95-85. Nemanja Bjelica led the Spanish side with 20 points and was one rebound away from a double-double.

Ioannis Bourousis led all scorers for Milano with a 22 point, 11 rebound double-double but unfortunately, the Italians couldn’t come away with the win.
