Men’s Olympic basketball round-up (QF)

A round-up of day one at the North Greenwich Arena as the men’s quarter-finals begin.

Russia overcome Lithuania

Russia survived a late surge to beat Lithuania in a nervy quarter-final 83-74.

Lithuania had pulled the gap to just a point in the fourth quarter, but a three from Sergey Monia followed by a lay-up in traffic proved too much for the Baltics to handle.

Andrei Kirilenko led Russia with 19 points and 13 rebounds, supported by 17 points from Timofey Mozgov.

Lithuania, who miss the semi-final round for the first time since independence in 1992 were led by Rimantas Kaukenas, who got 19 points.

Spain beat France in fiery encounter

In a re-match of last year’s Eurobasket final, Spain defeated France 66-59 in a heated battle.

France only scored six points and were held scoreless in the last six minutes as Spain ran away in the end. A Marc Gasol lay-up in traffic was a dagger with 1:20 left.

Marc Gasol led Spain with 14 points and eight rebounds. Tony Parker and Boris Diaw led France with 15 points each.

Argentina defeat old foe

Argentina booked the third semi-final spot after overcoming bitter rivals Brazil 82-77.

Brazil narrowed the gap to four points at 70-66 after being down 64-54 at the end of the third but Argentina stood tough, held their nerve and sealed the game from the line.

Manu Ginobili and Carlos Delfino each led Argentina with 16 points. Marcelinho Huertas and Leandro Barbosa led all scorers with 22 points for Brazil.

Fourth quarter surge give USA easy win

USA were made to work for their lead in the first three quarters, but in the end were comfortable 119-86 victors over Australia.

Australia kept the scoreline respectable and at one point closed the gap to eight points in the third but a fourth quarter burst from the Americans saw them home.

Kobe Bryant led the U.S. with 20 points. LeBron James got the first USA basketball triple-double with 11 points, 11 assists and 14 rebounds.
