Women’s Olympic basketball round-up (QF)

A round-up of the quarter-finals and the last day of action at the Basketball Arena before it all switches to the North Greenwich Arena.

USA crush Canada

USA breezed to the semi-finals with a convincing 91-48 win over Canada.

Diana Taurasi led the Americans with 15 points as they sped the first half, leading 42-21 and they never looked back.

Canada bowed out with Kim Smith leading their scoring with 13 points.

Australia beat determined China

Australia defeated a spirited China side 75-60 in game two of the quarter-finals.

Despite falling behind at half-time, Australia battled their way back into the game and later eased through thanks to a 20-8 fourth period.

Liz Cambage led the Opals with 17 points with China’s Zengyu Ma led her side with 15.

Russia defeat Turkey

In a rematch of the 2011 Eurobasket Women final, Russia defeated Turkey 66-63.

Evgeniya Belyakova hit a vital free throw with ten seconds left to put her side up 66-63, Turkey’s Birsel Vardarli had a chancce to win it, but her three-pointer missed as time expired.

Becky Hammon led Russia with 19 points and five assists. Nevriye Yilmaz led the Turks in vain with 22.

Dumerc dazzles as France beat Czechs

France battled back from a ten-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Czech Republic 71-68.

With the Czechs up 65-64 with 1:05 remaining, Celine Dumerc stepped up to drain a dagger three to seal the game.

Dumerc ended with 23 points to lead all scorers for France. Eva Viteckova led the Czechs with 17 points.
