Men’s Olympic basketball round-up (day ten)

A round-up of the final day in the preliminary round and round five of the men’s group stages.

Mills beats Russia on the buzzer

A Patty Mills three on the buzzer gave Australia an 82-80 victory over Russia in game one of the morning.

Vitaliy Fridzon hit two free-throws to put Russia 80-79 ahead which led to Aussie coach Brett Brown calling a timeout and from the resulting inbound, Mills hit deep from three to win the game.

Both teams were already through, Russia finish top despite that loss, their first of the tournament.

Australia, were led by Joe Ingles’ 20 points. Russia were fronted by Sasha Kaun’s 18 points.

Lithuania leave Tunisia winless

Lithuania used a 26-9 fourth quarter to defeat Tunisia 76-63.

This win ensured Lithuania’s progression to the next round, Tunisia finish without a win from five games played.

Sarunas Jasikevicius and Darius Songaila led Lithuania with 13 points each.

Tunisia were led by Amine Rzig with 17 points.

France overcome Nigeria

France beat Nigeria 79-73 after pulling away in the final three minutes.

Nicolas Batum scored 23 points for the French who, for a short period of time, top Group A on a 4-1 record.

Nigeria, who put up a brave fight despite their fate already confirmed were led by Chamberlain Oguchi who got a game-high 35 points.

Great Britain end on a high, thrash China

Great Britain bowed out of the Olympics on a positive note as they eased past China 90-58.

With both teams already out it was vital that they sign out on a high, and, in-front of nearly 10,000 fans, the host nation did just that.

China finish 0-5 and bottom of Group B with GB just above on a 1-4 record.

Brazil topple Spain

Brazil beat Spain 88-82 thanks to a 31-16 fourth quarter turnaround.

That result meant Brazil end with a 4-1 record and finish second with Spain third with a 3-2 record.

Leandro Barbosa led the South Americans with 23 points with Pau Gasol leading Spain with 23 points.

USA ease past Argentina to finish top

USA finished with an expected five wins from five following a 126-97 thrashing of Argentina in the final game of the prelliminary round.

Kevin Durant led from the front with 28 points for the Americans, who will now face Australia in the quarter-finals as relegate Argentina to third place and now they will face biter rivals Brazil in the next round.

Argentina were led by Manu Ginobili who got 16 points.
